NEW MIDWAY AIRLINES TO OFFER NON-STOP FLIGHTS TO MAJOR MARKETS FROM CHICAGO-MIDWAY AIRPORT

CHICAGO, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A new Midway Airlines will begin operations later this year with non-stop service between Chicago's Midway Airport and major mid-to-long-range markets -- initially in the Northeast -- new Midway Airlines President Kenneth T. Carlson told a press conference here today. Midway's unrestricted fare levels will be substantially less than the majors charge for full coach, yet its room and cabin comfort will equal their business class.
The new Midway is targeting a large and underserviced market segment: business people and other frequent travelers who are budget- minded yet want comfortable amenities, unrestricted travel, meaningful frequency and non-stop service to longer-range destinations (650-950 miles) from close-in Midway Airport. An innovative frequent flyer program, providing mileage redemption on other airlines' programs, and interline baggage transfer will be among the new Midway's other full- service features.
The new Midway is being launched with impressive financial strength and stability in an often turbulent industry -- a $245 million capital commitment. Investors include groups in Chicago, Florida and Texas. The company they formed, Midway Air Transportation, Inc., purchased rights to the Midway name in U.S. Bankruptcy Court earlier this month.
Midway will exclusively fly 100-seat configurations of brand-new, super-quiet Fokker 100 jets and has placed an initial order for eight aircraft with a market value in excess of $225 million. The first is scheduled to be delivered in October and the remainder at the rate of one per month. Manufactured by Fokker Aircraft, B.V., Amsterdam, Holland, the Stage III Fokker 100 is among the quietest, most technologically advanced jets on the market, powered by fuel-efficient and ecologically friendly Rolls Royce Tay engines.
Markets to be served during its initial year of operation include New York LaGuardia, Washington National as well as Boston and Philadelphia. Revenue operations will begin in November with frequency and destinations added as new aircraft are delivered. All flights will be non-stop, and will be either destined for or originate from Midway Airport.
"Stringent cost controls and focusing on a large, but narrowly defined, market are key and will allow us to offer a high-quality product at very attractive fare levels while providing a stable work environment for our employees and an excellent return to investors," Carlson said.
Carlson brings considerable expertise to his position. He was one of the founding principals of the original Midway Airlines when it was formed in 1976, leaving in 1980 to start New York Air as senior vice president and to serve as vice president of Texas Air. He founded Jet Express Corp. in 1983, providing regional airline service from Washington National Airport.
