NEW METHOD TO PREDICT BASEBALL'S PENNANT WINNERS DETERMINED

In `Statistic-Happy' Sport, Official Team Guacamole Recipes Heralded
as Newest Method to Predict Divisional Titles
SANTA ANA, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The "tastes of baseball" have never before determined the pennant race, but that may be changing, according to information released today by the California Avocado Commission. Statistic-happy baseball fans will now have a new way to predict pennant winners, as they try their favorite baseball teams' guacamole recipes.
"Looking into a California avocado may not be as easy as a glimpse into a crystal ball, but we think we may have stumbled upon a quirky way to pick sport champions," said the commission's President Mark Affleck. "During a recipe contest held last year, we discovered that our growers' favorite NFL(TM) team guacamole recipe actually predicted the team who won the Super Bowl -- the Dallas Cowboys. In order to test our guacamole predictor with baseball, we have acquired the Florida Marlins' recipe as well as recipes from other Major League Baseball(TM) teams, and are planning a guacamole play-off for the World Series."
While avocados may not directly affect this year's championship, given the superstitious nature of the sport, the commission did not want to exclude any team when compiling the recipes. "If players on a winning streak are willing to wear the same socks game after game, we felt it our duty to try and collect the guacamole recipes from all teams battling it out for a spot in the playoffs," Affleck said.
According to Affleck, more than 20 million ripe California avocados will be eaten on average every week leading up to the playoffs. "That's enough avocados to bury the infield of any stadium 18 feet deep in guacamole," he stated.
While some may allege that using guacamole recipes to forecast baseball's future is an unusual route, Affleck asserts that it is certainly as trustworthy as baseball's other "proven" methods: odd or even numbered years, whether a Republican or Democrat is in office, or whether the stock market is up or down.
All official guacamole playoff recipes were created by an individual associated with the team, such as a coach, player, trainer, team cook or front-office staff member. Kathy Hughes, wife of the Marlins' Director of Scouting Gary Hughes, supplied the Marlins' recipe, and confirms that the dip has been served to the team on several occasions.
A non-profit agency, the California Avocado Commission was founded in 1961 to conduct market-development activities on behalf of the state's 6,000 avocado growers.
