NEW LUFTHANSA CARGO CENTER OPENS AT O'HARE AIRPORT

NEW LUFTHANSA CARGO CENTER OPENS AT O'HARE AIRPORT
 /ADVANCE/ CHICAGO, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sept. 9 marks the

official opening of Lufthansa's new $42 million cargo facility at O'Hare International Airport. An increase in cargo tonnage to and from the Midwest area, plus the need for new office space and larger facilities, prompted Lufthansa to begin construction of the new 167,000-square-foot terminal in April 1991.
Jay R. Franke, commissioner of aviation, and William Brazley of Brazley & Associates, Chicago, architects for the project, will join Wilhelm Althen, Lufthansa's executive vice president, cargo, and Wolfgang Schmitz, Lufthansa's senior vice president, cargo, the Americas, both from Frankfurt, Germany, for the opening ceremonies in the new facility at O'Hare's southwest cargo area.
"We are proud of having our own Lufthansa Cargo Center at O'Hare," says Althen. "Such a major new investment reinforces Lufthansa's commitment to Chicago and the Midwest."
Construction of the new Cargo Center at O'Hare is a further step in Lufthansa's strategy of operating its own air cargo terminals and improving the quality of its ground services at the world's major freight hubs.
The new terminal features a state-of-the-art automated container handling system, covering 18,000 square feet, which will substantially accelerate processing and ground handling. This includes a ceiling monorail system capable of carrying up to 1,000 pounds per unit.
To facilitate freight handling in the warehouse, there are security vaults, cooler units and areas for animals and dangerous goods storage. One end of the warehouse is capable of storing up to 250 10-foot containers which can be retrieved by an electronic transfer vehicle.
For Boeing 747 freighter aircraft, the building has a "nose-in" dock so that loading and unloading can take place through both the nose and side cargo doors. All systems and interior installations were constructed according to exacting Lufthansa specifications.
Lufthansa's Cargo Center at O'Hare will become home to the airline's entire central region management, which includes passenger sales, marketing and administration as well as cargo sales and operations. The office area covers 48,000 square feet and is located above the cargo operations on the second and third levels. By the end of September, approximately 125 people will be employed at the site. Currently, the airline's management and passenger sales office is in downtown Chicago in the John Hancock Center.
In addition to five weekly scheduled 747 freighter services between Chicago and Frankfurt, Lufthansa operates daily passenger flights to Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, which accommodate cargo in the bellies.
