NEW LONDON, N.H., CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS 'TWINNED' WITH HARRODS IN 'OLD' LONDON

NEW LONDON, N.H., CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS 'TWINNED'
 WITH HARRODS IN 'OLD' LONDON
NEW LONDON, N.H., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Nowhere in America is Christmas celebrated with more style or appreciation of traditional values than in New England. For this reason, Harrods, the world's most famous department store, has chosen New England for its Christmas theme as its shares that style and those values. The perception held in Great Britain of a New England Christmas is that it recalls a by-gone era when simple rituals like decorating the tree, exchanging gifts and singing carols were joyous occasions. New Englanders glory in the past, in nature's beauty, and in the family. So, too, does Harrods.
As we all know, few things are as pretty as a New England town at Christmas time, with every clapboard house bedecked with hand-made wreaths and red bows, each pine Christmas tree festooned with lights and hand-crafted ornaments, each mantlepiece laden down with candles, stockings, carved figures and still more greenery. New England Christmas decorations place the emphasis on the rustic and the handmade. Painted wood or tin ornaments, pine cones and boughs, red and white quilts, nuts, fruit, berries -- all are used to create a traditional, festive atmosphere which harks back to yesteryear.
Harrods will be following New England's lead by filling its halls and hallways with traditional decorations in red, white and green, with the 72 outside windows recreating the festive appearance of typical New England interiors into which passing shoppers may gaze.
As a gesture of our special Anglo-American friendship, Harrods has twinned itself with the New England town of New London, N.H., for the duration of this 1992 Christmas holiday season.
With many historical links to "old" London, New London, N.H., is a quintessentially picture-perfect small, New England town. Occupying a spectacular, elevated position in the heart of the beautiful New Hampshire lakes and ski region, it is a town of enormous charm that maintains the unspoiled, old-world values like Harrods.
With customary New England hospitality, the citizens of New London have taken their "twin" to heart and enthusiastic preparations are already underway for a very warm Harrods recognition ceremony that will include special welcome signs at either and of town, in all the storefronts, and involvement from a number of New London artisans with the recreation of a New England village in Harrods Central Hall.
On Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. in London, Santa Claus and his parade will arrive at the front door of Harrods. Simultaneously at 5 a.m. in New London, N.H., the residents will rise early, throw a log on the fire and, warmly wrapped up against the cold, will attend the official unveiling of the town's signs proclaiming their twinning with Harrods and the switching on of their own festive lights.
