NEW JERSEY INSURANCE COMPANY SEEKS TO EASE FINANCIAL CONCERNS OF
                        HIV-POSITIVE INSUREDS
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The New Jersey Department of Insurance has given permission to a New Jersey professional liability insurance company to provide income protection to its insureds by offering a $500,000 benefit to eligible doctors who become HIV positive, no matter how the infection is contracted.
Medical Inter-Insurance Exchange (MIIX) is the first New Jersey company to make this coverage available at no additional cost to its New Jersey insured medical practitioners. Pre-testing will not be a requirement for eligible MIIX insureds to receive coverage.
"We are addressing a problem which can have a potentially devastating impact on those few doctors who may be affected," said Daniel Goldberg, MIIX president. "We are here to serve doctors with responsive and innovative programs, and I believe that we are doing our part to deal straightforwardly and candidly with this dilemma for doctors and patients alike."
A key stipulation is that in order to receive the additional benefit, the doctors must agree to follow any and all state, federal or Centers for Disease Control regulations and guidelines concerning the HIV practice protections during the benefit period.
"The department's action expanded the company's Certificate of Authority which will enable it to provide the coverage after Jan. 1, 1992," according to Goldberg.
"Traditional insurance plans are not designed to provide coverage for HIV or AIDS sufferers, and our policy extension is intended to address this by providing a supplemental to fill potential coverage gaps which may exist in standard disability, health and workers compensation insurances," Goldberg said.
"We hope our coverage lessens the personal anguish of doctors contracting HIV infection by easing concern over the financial impact on them and their families," he added.
The Lawrenceville-based company is the largest medical professional liability insurer in the state and represents more than 70 percent of the doctors in New Jersey with a subscriber network of some 8,000 medical practitioners.
