NEW JERSEY CASINO CONTROL COMMISSION TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING

NEW JERSEY CASINO CONTROL COMMISSION TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Casino Control Commission has scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, Aug. 20 to hear testimony on the "50 percent rule."
That rule, adopted by the commission on July 20, 1979, prohibits Atlantic City casino licensees from using slot machines manufactured by one company for more than 50 percent of the slot machines in their casinos. There are limited exceptions. For example, a casino licensee affiliated with a slot manufacturer can exceed the 50 percent limit, as long as machines supplied by that manufacturer do not account for more than 50 percent of all the slot machines in the city.
Commission Chairman Steven Perskie said the hearing has been scheduled in response to various inquiries from interested parties, including casino licensees and slot manufacturers. Testimony will be heard on whether the commission should modify, retain or repeal the rule.
When the commission adopted the rule in 1979, it also endorsed a policy statement that cited the need to encourage competition in the slot industry and to avoid potential problems that could result from "economic concentration" if one supplier controlled more than half the slot market. The rule has been upheld by the state Supreme Court.
"The casino industry has changed dramatically in the past 13 years, both in Atlantic City and nationwide. So has the slot-machine industry," Perskie said. "We need to determine if our regulations need to be modified as well, to reflect these changes."
The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. in the Joseph P. Lordi Public Meeting Room at the commission's headquarters in the Arcade Building, Tennessee Avenue and the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.
