NEW JERSEY BELL VICE PRESIDENT WILLIAM S. FORD, JR. ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RETIRE

 NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- New Jersey Bell today announced that William S. Ford. Jr., vice president-external affairs and chief financial officer, will retire at the end of the year. No successor has been named.
 "I have decided to retire so that I can spend more time with my family and pursue other interests," said Ford. "I've had a long and fulfilling career here at New Jersey Bell and I've been fortunate to be a part of an exciting and challenging corporation. I leave confident that the company will continue to make significant contributions to our state and the communities we serve."
 Ford began his career at New Jersey Bell in 1961 and held a number of management positions around the state. In 1977, he became general accounting manger, a position he held until early 1983, when he was appointed assistant vice president data systems. Since that time, he held positions as general manger-accounting, assistant vice president- finance and vice president-sales before becoming vice president-external affairs in April 1987. He assumed the responsibilities of chief financial officer in January 1988.
 "Bill Ford has been a key member of our executive team at New Jersey Bell. Under his direction, we have improved significantly our role as a corporate citizen in the communities around this state," said James G. Cullen, New Jersey Bell president and chief executive officer.
 "Bill was a major force in our successful introduction of a number of initiatives that have combined to create a healthy regulatory environment for our company. That environment has contributed to our ability to bring state-of-the-art technologies to our customers."
 Ford, 58, is a graduate of Villanova University. He served as a captain in the U.S. Marines. he is a member of the board of trustees of the College of Saint Elizabeth, the Independent College Fund of New Jersey, the Tri-County Scholarship Fund, the Public Affairs Research Institute of New Jersey, the Community Foundation of New Jersey, the New Community Corporation and the New Jersey Safety Council. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors, first vice president and treasurer of the New Jersey Utilities Association and a member of the board of directors of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce. He also belongs to the Minisink Club of Chatham.
 Ford is a former trustee of the United Way of Morris County and the United Way of North Essex. He also has served on the Chatham Borough Board of Recreation.
 Ford and his wife, Jacqueline, reside in Chatham. They have six children.
