NEW JERSEY BELL IMPROVES BILL PAYMENT SERVICE

NEW JERSEY BELL IMPROVES BILL PAYMENT SERVICE
 NEWARK, N.J., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Effective tomorrow (Aug. 1,

1992), New Jersey Bell's customers who pay their telephone bills in person will have a number of new locations to choose from and payments will be credited to their accounts faster.
To find their nearest payment location, customers may call toll free, 800-660-9933 in the 201 area code; 800-287-9933 in the 908 area code and 800-540-9933 in the 609 area code.
The improved service is being provided for New Jersey Bell under a new contract with Buypass, a subsidiary of CoreStates Financial. Buypass has arranged for about 220 retail establishments that have been accepting payments to continue taking them. In addition, 50 New Jersey National Bank branches temporarily will accept payments that formerly were handled by about 45 retail establishments. Convenience, grocery and hardware stores typically serve as "computerized payment agents" as a service to their customers. Additional retail locations will be added in the near future.
The Buypass system will facilitate the crediting of accounts by the next day for cash or check payments made by 1 p.m., and within two days for payments made after 1 p.m.
Under the prior system, it took two days and longer to credit accounts. Up to 70 percent of payments are made before 1 p.m. according to New Jersey Bell records.
Another service improvement planned in the near future by Buypass will enable customers to make deposit payments to establish or reestablish service. This will be more convenient for customers and their telephone service will be connected more quickly.
About 90 percent of New Jersey Bell's customers find it most convenient to pay their bills by mail. In 1987, the company began providing computerized payment agents for customers who need to pay in person.
