NEW JERSEY, SEARS RESOLVE AUTO INQUIRY
CHICAGO, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S)

said today its agreement with the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs further expands its commitment to seek uniform auto repair standards and is in the best interests of not only New Jersey motorists, but all U.S. drivers.
New Jersey Attorney General Robert Del Tufo and Consumer Affairs Division Director Emma Byrne announced Tuesday resolution of the state's inquiry of six Sears auto centers and settlement of any claims it might have had as a result of the investigation in January through April of this year.
Sears Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Edward A. Brennan said, "Though several weeks of discussions with New Jersey officials, our prime concern was the safety and welfare of our customers and their vehicles and our agreement today addresses these objectives."
Brennan said the agreement also recognizes the initiatives Sears announced June 22 to preserve customer confidence and trust. Those programs, which have been or are being implemented, include: elimination of commissions for Sears auto service advisors; elimination of product-specific sales goals and incentives; and introduction of independent "shopping audits" of Sears auto centers.
The agreement also expands Sears support of activities to seek uniform auto repair standards by underwriting the initial cost of $200,000 to the National Association of Attorneys General for an Automotive Repair Industry Reform Fund. On June 22 Sears announced it would aggressively pursue and help fund an industry-government-consumer effort with similar goals.
Sears will also pay a $3,000 penalty for not posting appropriate consumer rights signs in the six auto centers the state visited.
