NEW JACK KING IS BACK; TEDDY RILEY SWINGS WITH BLACKSTREET

LOS ANGELES, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The founding father of New Jack Swing is back. Teddy Riley, the man who invigorated rhythm & blues vocals with hip hop beats, is singing again for the first time since the multi-platinum Guy disbanded. He's kept busy, though, as a producer for artists as varied as Michael Jackson and Heavy D, SWV and Wreckx-N- Effect, Bobby Brown and Kool Moe Dee, platinum efforts all. In fact, Riley has racked up 31 platinum records, and another nine have gone gold. But now he's focused on a new group, BLACKstreet, and their just released eponymous debut on Interscope Records.
Though Riley is the biggest name, he's far from being the only talent in BLACKstreet. He's joined by Chauncey "Black" Hannibal (an original member of Jodeci), David Hollister (backing singer for Mary J. Blige, Al B. Sure, Patti LaBelle and 2Pac) and Levi Little (lead guitar, bass and keyboards). BLACKstreet is a true collaboration, though, as one quick listen is sure to tell.
"If everyone is expecting me to come with another Guy, they're going to be surprised," says Riley. While BLACKstreet wears with pride its heritage in New Jack Swing, which saved R&B from obscurity, it's moved beyond the sound of the mid-80s. The beats are stronger, the instrumentation more lush (especially the horns), the raps have more flavor. BLACKstreet swings with a confidence rarely seen in a new group (but evident from the lineage of its members), a confidence that lets it take chances. It's paraphrasing "Atomic Dog" in "Booti Call," adding an Earth, Wind & Fire scat to "Givin' You All My Lovin'," and quoting the Gap Band (and their vocals) for "U Blow My Mind." When you play with classics, comparisons are inevitable. BLACKstreet knows they're good enough to play.
BLACKstreet has already garnered its share of attention. It's very first effort, the single "Baby Be Mine," was included on the soundtrack of the film "CB4" and became a top 20 R&B hit. "Booti Call," the first single from BLACKstreet is currently lodged at #52 with a bullet on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles, and the video is in full rotation on MTV, BET, and The Box. A second single, a silky ballad entitled "Joy," is scheduled for a late August release.
Get ready for BLACKstreet, which Vibe already prophesies as "bound to be a funk classic." With Riley at the helm, BLACKstreet is on the road to success.
