NEW INFORMATION FROM THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL INDICATES THAT IMMUNIZATION LEVELS FOR CHILDREN ARE GETTING WORSE

NEW YORK, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- New information from the Center for Disease Control indicates that immunization levels for pre-school age children in the United States are getting worse according to the March issue of "The Atlantic Monthly."
In the first nation-wide survey since 1985, thirty-eight states recently reported fewer than two thirds of two-year-olds have received the recommended immunizations. The median vaccination rate for all states reporting is only 56 percent.
While the rates in some big cities -- 18 percent in Houston and 38 percent in New York City are extremely low, this is not just an inner city problem. Some surveys have shown that vaccination rates in rural areas could be lower than those in inner cities.
Behind these findings are two fundamental problems. First, the United States is the only industrialized country that does not now have -- nor has it ever had -- a national approach to vaccinating young children. Second, during the past ten years skyrocketing prices for vaccinations, reduced staff and hours at public clinics, and recommendations that new vaccines be given have made it harder not easier for young children to get vaccinations. The result is that many middle-income children, as well as lower-income children are now lacking protection.
