NEW INDUSTRY BENCHMARKING RESULTS ANNOUNCED: IBM ANNOUNCES PRICE/PERFORMANCE LEADERSHIP FOR RISC SYSTEM/6000

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that two of its RISC System/6000(A) POWERservers(A) have achieved commercial price/performance leadership based on independent, industry-standard benchmarks.
Running the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) -- Benchmark C(B), which measures commercial transactions per minute (tpmC) and commercial price/performance ($/tpmC), the RISC System/6000 POWERserver 570 achieved marks of 395.68 tpmC and $2,003/tpmC in a client/server configuration. These results give the 570 deskside server comparable performance at a price/performance advantage of nearly 28 percent over the Hewlett-Packard(B) series 9000 model H40, (406.65 tpmC, $2,786/tpmC).
In Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) benchmarks using System File Server (SFS) Release 1.0, the RISC System/6000 POWERserver 580, IBM's most powerful deskside server, achieved an industry-leading price/performance rating of $300 SFSnfs.A93 operations per second, an advantage of more than 25 percent over HP's series 9000 model H50.
"Leadership performance and superior customer value are two cornerstones of the RISC System/6000 business, and we will continue to give our customers industry-leading performance and price/performance in the coming year," said Phil Hester, vice president of Systems and Technology for IBM Advanced Workstations and Systems (AWS).
The Transaction Processing Performance Council is a non-profit organization, formed in 1988, to develop standard benchmarks to compare the performance of systems in commercial on-line transaction processing (OLTP) environments. The TPC Benchmark C is a complex workload modeled after a warehouse distribution business. All TPC benchmark specifications require that the system meet basic criteria such as data integrity and recovery capability which are needed in a commercial computing environment. TPC has over 40 members including hardware, relational database vendors and systems integrators.
The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to establish, maintain and endorse a standardized set of relevant application-oriented benchmarks that can be applied to the newest generation of high-performance computers. SPEC counts IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems among its 24 member companies.
The benchmark used in the NFS test was SPEC System File Server (SFS) Release 1.0, which contains the 097.
LADDIS benchmark. This benchmark provides a standardized method for comparing NFS file server performance, throughput and response time across different platforms.
IBM's Advanced Workstations and Systems business, based in Austin, Texas, designs, develops and manufactures the RISC System/6000 line of workstations and servers, the AIX/6000 operating system and related software products, and graphics devices for the workstation products. AWS is also co-developer of the next-generation PowerPC RISC microprocessor family. Its products are available in the United States through the IBM direct sales force and IBM Business Partners.
