NEW IBM ADSTAR PRODUCTS FOR OEM MARKET

 /NOTE TO EDITORS: The following is a revised version of NY023 which moved earlier today. There are numerous changes throughout the release./
 SAN JOSE, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM's ADSTAR business unit today announced five additions to its broad line of disk drives and storage subsystems for the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) market.
 The new drives deliver a unique, industry-leading combination of technology, quality and reliability that meet the expanding needs of the OEM market. They include:
 -- The industry's first available 1.0 gigabyte (GB) disk drives in the 1-inch high, 3.5-inch form factor;
 -- The first double-density 5.25-inch magneto-optical drive;
 -- A new family of 3.5-inch low profile disk drives that extends ADSTAR's storage offerings for the desktop to 340 megabytes (MB);
 -- Enhanced 2.5-inch disk drives with data capacities of 85 and 171MB;
 -- A network file server that provides leading edge performance and capacity for large workstation environments.
 "ADSTAR's goal is to rapidly deliver to our customers the right combination of technology, features, packaging and manufacturing expertise in products that meet their varied needs," said Ray AbuZayyad, IBM vice president and general manager of ADSTAR. "We're pleased to offer the range of storage products in today's announcement to our OEM customers who, in turn, will pass these advanced capabilities on to their end-users."
 The 0662 Family
 Models S12, S1D, SW1 and SWD
 ADSTAR's new 0662 family of 1.0 GB, 1-inch high, 3.5-inch disk drives sets a new industry standard for the greatest amount of computer data storage in the smallest amount of space, offering OEMs unparalleled capacity, performance, packaging and price competitiveness. With an exclusive, second generation Magneto-Resistive head that provides an industry-leading areal density of 354 MB/sq.in., the 0662 satisfies customer demands for data-intensive applications that can be used in workstation, mid-range and mainframe environments. More than 250,000 units of ADSTAR's industry-leading predecessor disk drive, the 1.6-inch 1 GB 0663 family, were shipped in 1992.
 "With only three disks, the 0662 drives deliver more data storage in a smaller package than ever before available," said Stan Ciraulo, ADSTAR's vice president of development and manufacturing. "This device - with its very high data rates and improved seek times - leads the industry, outperforming drives with higher revolutions per minute (RPM)." The 0662 units have a projected mean time between failures (MTBF) of 800,000 hours, which Ciraulo said, "sets a new standard for reliability, based on a simple design with few components and an automated manufacturing process."
 General availability of the 0662 family is scheduled for the second quarter of 1993.
 The 0632 Double-Density Optical Disk Drive
 Models C2A, C2B, C2C, C2D and C2G
 The 0632 unit, announced today, is the industry's first double- density rewritable magneto-optical drive, conforming fully to the new ECMA standard 184. Designed to operate in optical library and workstation environments, the 5.25-inch drive provides UP TO 1.3 GB of removable storage. It also is downward-compatible with the 650 MB media standard for previous generations of 5.25-inch Optical Disk Drives. The 0632 provides enhanced performance through the use of IBM's exclusive autowrite calibration sequence, which optimizes the read-write and seek operations based on the characteristics of the media.
 Evaluation units of the 0632 are available now; production quantities will be available on an OEM contract basis.
 3-1/2-Inch 133, 171, 256 and 342 MB Disk Drives
 Models H3133, H3171, H3256, H3342
 Today, ADSTAR is announcing a new family of 3.5-inch disk drives that offers a range of storage capacities from 133 to 342 MB. These drives provide flexible, cost-competitive storage solutions for a variety of applications and industries.
 Evaluation units will be available in April for the AT(IDE) interface model, and 3Q93 for the SCSI interface model.
 2-1/2-Inch 85 and 171 MB Low Profile Disk Drives
 Models WDA-2080 and WDA-W2160
 ADSTAR reinforces its commitment to the low-end market by extending the storage capacity of its family of 2.5-inch hard disk drives, adding new 85 and 171 MB models. These drives are designed to meet the storage demands of laptop and notebook computers.
 Evaluation units are available now.
 POWER Network Data Server
 7051 Models 840 and 800
 ADSTAR announced the availability for the OEM market of its recently introduced 7051 POWER Network Dataserver, a high-performance, high- capacity Network File System (NFS(A)) server. Designed for workgroups requiring fast performance and large amounts of on-line data, it attaches up to eight Ethernet local area networks (LANS) and provides a wide range of storage capacities, from 8 to 144 GB. The 7051 delivers over 2,000 I/O operations per second, more than 3-5 times the NFS I/O throughput of typical Unix(B) servers.
 The 7051 POWER Network Data Server will be available in May 1993.
