NEW GROUP TO PROMOTE AND PRESERVE HERITAGE OF THE INTREPID; GENERAL POWELL TO KICK OFF 'INTREPID MONTH'
NEW GROUP TO PROMOTE AND PRESERVE HERITAGE OF THE INTREPID; GENERAL POWELL TO KICK OFF 'INTREPID MONTH' NEW YORK, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Patriotism is back in a big way and nowhere is it more evident than at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum where a new society of supporters is beginning a year-long series of educational and fundraising events in support of the Museum and its heritage. "We're committed to preserving the Intrepid as an important educational experience for future generations," said Kent L. Karosen, co-chairman of the Intrepid Museum Society. "The Intrepid has much to teach the young people of our city, and, for that matter, all Americans." Joint Chief of Staff General Colin Powell, a graduate of New York's public schools, will officially kick off "Intrepid Month" at the Museum on Tuesday, March 31, speaking before an audience of more than 800 New York City schoolchildren. During Intrepid Month, April 13-May 16, between 12,000-15,000 fifth graders from the five boroughs will pass through the Museum free-of- charge thanks to a joint effort by the Museum, the Society, the NYC Board of Education and the Archdiocese of New York. The educational field trip will include transportation to and from the Museum, as well as a free lunch and souvenirs. "Intrepid Month is a chance for kids to see aircraft, spacecraft and, of course, the aircraft carrier itself," said Society Co-chairman William B. White. "We hope to impress these young people with the vital role the Intrepid played in keeping our nation strong in wartime and in peace." According to White, the Intrepid Museum Society was formed last year to assist Zachary Fisher, chairman of the Museum, in generating financial support for the Intrepid. The Society has two more events planned in 1992. On May 9, the Society will hold a "night under the stars" fundraising cocktail party on the flight deck of the Intrepid. On Oct. 5, a Grand Benefit Dinner will be held to honor the recipients of Intrepid Freedom Medal and the Intrepid Gold Medal of Honor. All proceeds from these events will benefit the Museum. The Intrepid Museum Society, a group of approximately 65 young professionals, is affiliated with the Museum, which is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) not-for profit corporation. The organizers of the Intrepid Museum Society are the same group that last year formed "Operation Support," which raised over $250,000 in aid for the families of soldiers fallen in Desert Storm. Major corporate sponsors of the Society include Gannett Outdoor Advertising, which has donated advertising space for Intrepid Month, and McDonald's, which has donated lunches for the fifth graders. Generous in-kind support has been received from the following companies: Duggal Color Projects, Edison Parking, Hewlett-Packard, HQ Companies, Princeton Press, Rent-A-PC, Trump Shuttle, and Xerox Corporation. The Society is currently seeking other corporate sponsors to underwrite the cost of admissions, supervision, and complimentary souvenirs for the children during the month-long event.
