NEW FLOWSTREAM RELEASE FROM CONSILIUM OFFERS ELECTRONIC NOTEBOOK FUNCTIONALITY

New Document Management Features Also Available
 For Pharmaceutical And Chemical Manufacturers
INTERPHEX, N.Y., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Consilium, Inc., the leading supplier of manufacturing execution systems (MES) software and services, today announced new enhancements for FlowStream, its integrated software product to support regulatory compliance and process optimization for the process industries. The new FlowStream release incorporates an electronic "notebook" and "logbook" to simplify the automation of record keeping procedures in chemical and pharmaceutical facilities. With the addition of the notebook and logbook, FlowStream combines the power of transaction processing with the ease of use of document driven systems. Consilium also announced today the availability of new document management features to complement its FlowStream software.
 New Electronic Notebook and Logbook
FlowStream's new electronic notebook provides records of master and batch procedures in the pharmaceutical environment and master and batch recipies in the chemical environment. Master records can be electronically authored, copied for a specific product batch and modified. The electronic logbook replaces paper logs for equipment, sample and receiving procedures. Use of FlowStream's electronic notebook and logbook instead of manual data recording can eliminate data entry as a source of potential violation and improve a manufacturer's ability to comply with regulatory bodies.
According to Dr. Jonathan J. Golovin, Consilium's founder and acting head, process products division, "Accurate records of batch procedures and recipies are vital to operational, compliance and commercialization issues for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Electronic record keeping can now be used to prove compliance today and improve operational efficiency tomorrow."
 New Document Management Features
Consilium now offers two new document management features to complement FlowStream -- Document Vault and Document Revision -- which increase the security and speed of documentation procedures.
Document Vault offers permanent and secure storage of documents along with a complete audit trail of their life cycle. It includes features for defining and implementing authorization and approval routes for documents, document version control, and a revision archive. Document Vault supports both FlowStream procedures and supporting documents from a variety of other file formats, including many popular text and graphics formats.
Document Revision provides the ability to electronically view and mark up documents in the revision process. Documents can be redlined with comments carried throughout the review cycle. Document Revision also has tools to modify and edit imported images.
With its new electronic notebook and logbook and new document management features, FlowStream enables manufacturers to:
-- Electronically access environmental, health and safety documentation
-- Transfer new procedures, records and recipies to production without paper overhead
-- Link batch and production data with customer specifications and certificates of analysis
-- Collect documents in electronic folders from diverse departments
In addition to manufacturing operations, FlowStream's electronic notebook and logbook are being used to add value to research and development activities in both pharmaceutical and chemical applications. The notebook and logbok can significantly reduce time-to-market for new products as reporting capabilities are integrated with all historical data.
"The powerful combination of FlowStream and these document management packages facilitates fast and complete product development for scaleup, commercialization and transfer to manufacturing," said Golovin. "With these tools, the entire product life cycle can now be automated."
 Pricing and Availability
The production version of the new FlowStream release will be available this spring. The cost of the new version with document management features begins at $200,000 for 12 users.
 FlowStream for Regulatory Compliance
FlowStream software integrates process or step instructions with the collection of data throughout the facility, from the laboratory to packaging, for both manual and automated operations. FlowStream provides chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing with a complete solution to help ensure regulatory compliance -- reporting operator exposure and equipment and labor qualification to OSHA, providing batch history reports to FDA and reporting waste and emissions to the EPA -- and boost operational efficiency and control -- without the necessity of user programming.
FlowStream is built on the technology of the '90s, incorporating client-server architecture, object-oriented programming in C++, an SQL-compliant relational database and OSF/Motif Window Manager for its graphical user environment.
