NEW ENGLAND GOVERNORS CHALLENGE SLATED FOR FRIDAY

SUGARLOAF, Maine, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Winter Olympics may not be until next month, but for Maine Governor John McKernan, Jr., his olympic challenge will take place this Friday (Jan. 14, 1994) at Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley. He and nine other skiers representing Maine State Government will be facing Governor Howard Dean of Vermont and Governor Steve Merrill of New Hampshire and their teams in the 1994 New England Governor's Ski Challenge, slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. in Sugarloaf's Recreational Race Arena on the Boardwalk Trail.
"Maine showed its obvious superiority last year and I'm confident that with the superior skiing skills of the Maine team we well again sweep this series," stated Governor McKernan. "Last year we proved we were the best of New England with a sweep of all three races in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. We've shown we could out-ski them on their mountains as well as our own. This year we intend to do the same."
Slated to ski with McKernan on the Maine team are: Abby Holman, chief of staff; Mary Faye LaFaver, director of Economic Development; Dave Lakey, press secretary; Mike Richardson, governor's security; John Devine, Legal Counsel; William Brennan of Marine Resources; Christina Valar of the Professional and Financial Regulation Department; Andy MacLean of Emergency Management, and Andy Holman, the team's official "ringer." Each team will be allowed a "ringer" from outside the ranks of state government who is an accomplished ski racer.
The event is sponsored by the Ski Maine Association and hosted by Sugarloaf/USA. CB Sports is the Maine Team Uniform Sponsor. Vermont will host the second race in the series on Feb. 7 at Jay Peak and New Hampshire will host the finale on March 11 at Cannon Mountain. The series helps promote winter tourism in the three states and showcases the importance of the ski industry in the region. Skiing represents approximately $750 million to the economy of northern New England.
