NEW EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM COMBINES MUSIC MOVEMENT AND LEARNING

NEW EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM COMBINES MUSIC MOVEMENT AND LEARNING
THREE OAKS, Mich., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Learning with a twist... and a bend and a jump. That's the best way to describe the new "kids- your-cise" program developed by teacher and mother of three, Lori Kuntz.
Kuntz, a former physical education and music teacher at Montessori school in Benton Harbor, also teaches aerobics in Three Oaks. She has combined her knowledge of children, movement and music to form the unique "kids-your-cise" program.
"'Kids-your-cise' is a educational program for children from 18 months to six years," Kuntz says. "It combines lessons on the importance of sharing, caring for others and good self esteem with basic educational skills such as letter and number recognition. The program encourages children to take part in the learning process through music, pictures, games and light movement."
Kuntz has spent the past three years developing, testing and producing the program which includes a 32 page booklet with animated illustrations, instructions for leaders and ideas for expanding on the programs. Also included is a 45 minute audio cassette with music, movement and educational segments, laminated letter/number flash cards and the "Work-it-Out" mat.
The "Work-it-Out" mat is blanket sized vinyl floor mat imprinted with oversized letters on one side and numbers on the other. Children, by following the booklet and tape, can actively learn while playing on this mat.
Some advantages of the program are that it captivates children by turning the learning situation into fun and games, and that it can be performed indoors with limited space. "I wanted a simple, straight forward teaching aid that was educational, progressive and that the children would respond to," Kuntz said.
The program has been tested with positive results by several elementary and pre-school teachers as well as day care centers in the southwest Michigan and Chicago areas. Judith Buchaski, a Psychology instructor at Lake Michigan College states, "Combining body movement with spelling and arithmetic is likely to make acquisition of these skills more enjoyable for the young child. I particularly like the program's frequent references to positive self regard and good self esteem. These are important issues in childhood."
Kuntz has formed "kid-business" to distribute "kids-your-cise" and develop similar programs. The primary market for the "kids-your-cise" program, which retails for $54.95, will be day care centers, pre- schools, elementary schools, head start programs and similar educational centers. Though it's geared for educational settings, the program's educational fun will also benefit children in the home.
There is also a music and movement only version available without the "Work-it-Out" mat and flash cards. It includes a booklet as well as a 25 minute audio tape and sells for $8.95. The prices are discounted to $49.95 for the full program and $6.95 for the music and movement version until Feb. 9, 1992. They are available from kid-business at 16481 Three Oaks Road, Three Oaks, MI 49128; or call 616-756-7424.
