NEW DISPENSING CENTER EXTENDS SURE-MED(R) AUTOMATED DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM CAPABILITIES

ROUND LAKE, Ill., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Baxter Healthcare Corp. (NYSE: BAX) has announced the launch of the new Sure-Med(R) Dispensing Center, which provides secure dispensing of medications and supplies when unit-dose control is not required. The new center adds another dispensing option to the Sure-Med(R) Automated Distribution System. It was demonstrated the first time at the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists Convention in Denver held in June.
The Dispensing Center offers large capacity -- stocking 200-plus medications and supplies -- with maximized flexibility. The New Dispensing Center continues to provide the secure access, ease of use, improved productivity, elimination of lost charges and enhanced billing accuracy that are well-documented benefits of the Sure-Med(R) Unit-Dose Center.
The Sure-Med(R) Automated Distribution System allows hospitals to select the level of control required and offers the advantages of a UNIX(R) operating system to provide the most cost-effective management of medications and supplies, now and in the future. The addition of the Sure-Med(R) Dispensing Center extends a line of products that includes Expansion Cabinets -- which allow storage capacity to be configured to meet individual needs -- and software programs that add further capabilities to the system.
The UNIX(R) operating system is an important feature of both the new Sure-Med(R) Dispensing Center and of the entire Sure-Med(R) Automated Distribution system. UNIX(R) offers multi-tasking capability that is essential to maximize efficiency. It allows dispensing of medication, printing of reports, system diagnostics, and communications between the Host Computer and the hospital's HIS system to occur rapidly and simultaneously.
This Sure-Med(R) system complements, and integrates with other productivity products from Baxter, including the MedTake(TM) Bedside System, and ATC 212 Automated Medication Dispensing System for the pharmacy. Since 1984, when Baxter developed unit-dose automation technology, the company has been committed to development of products that enhance patient care through reduced hospital operating costs and improved productivity.
