NEW DISNEY WEB SITE HAS QUIRKY DEBUT.

Byline: Yardena Arar Daily News Staff Writer

The best-laid plans of mice and men don't always work out - and Monday a mouse named Mickey ran into a couple of computer bugs.

The Walt Disney Co. announced Monday that while its newly redesigned World Wide Web site, disney.com, would not officially open until Feb. 22, sneak previews were available immediately to America Online and Netscape users via special links on AOL's Internet Connection and Netscape's home page.

America Online users additionally were invited to participate in daily on-line scavenger hunts for prizes, the Disney announcement said.

However, Netscape's home page had no links to the Disney site until Monday night, and on AOL's disney.com gateway page - as viewed on a 14-inch Windows PC monitor - an illustration concealed information about the on-line scavenger hunt.

The AOL link to the Disney web site was active, however, and the site itself appeared to be in perfect working order.

"We messed up," Netscape Communications Corp. spokeswoman Andrea Cook said Monday after learning that the link to special Disney pages hadn't been put on Netscape's home page during the day.

America Online representatives could not be reached for comment Monday evening.

Disney Online senior vice president Winnie Wechsler said she had been advised that the problem with the graphics appeared only on certain monitors.

"We've been trying all day to get them to fix it," Wechsler added.
