 NEW DIRECTOR ELECTED TO HARNISCHFEGER INDUSTRIES BOARD
 BROOKFIELD, Wis., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Donna M. Alvarado, president and chief executive officer of Quest International, a non- profit educational organization that promotes positive youth development in 27 countries, was elected today to the board of directors of Harnischfeger Industries, Inc.
 A winner of the U.S. Department of Defense's Medal for Distinguished Public Service, Ms. Alvarado has also served as executive vice president of the Mexican-American Women's National Association and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City.
 Ms. Alvarado was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Director of ACTION, the federal domestic volunteer agency. In this position from 1985 to 1989, Ms. Alvarado directed the activities of nearly 500,000 Americans who serve as volunteers in VISTA, Foster Grandparents, Retired Senior Volunteers, the ACTION Drug Alliance and Student Community Service.

 Ms. Alvarado has also served as: Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Equal Opportunity and Safety Policy; a member of the U.S. Congress Commission on International Migration and Cooperative Economic Development; Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Refugee Policy; a staff member of the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control; and a U.S. delegate to the Nairobi World Conference of the United Nations Decade for Women.
 Ms. Alvarado earned a bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio State University and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Oklahoma. Her election increased the size of the board from 11 to 12 members.
 Harnischfeger Industries is a diversified international holding company that operates four subsidiaries involved in: papermaking machinery manufacturing (Beloit Corporation); surface mining and overhead material handling equipment manufacturing (Harnischfeger Corporation); and systems integration services (Harnischfeger Engineers, Inc. and Syscon Corporation).
