Affordable Networking Equipment from MICOM Provides Secret
Business Advantage for Small, Mid-sized Companies
SIMI VALLEY, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Small and mid-sized businesses worldwide are now using a little-known communications device to gain business advantage over the competition. Affordable Marathon 1K and 5K Data/Voice Network Servers from MICOM Communications Corp. allow companies to transmit free phone calls along with computer data traffic to remote office locations, resulting in greatly reduced phone bills and larger business profits.
According to industry analysts, MICOM's introduction of Marathon 1K and 5K Data/Voice Network Servers has sparked a fast-growing phenomenon for small and medium-sized businesses and divisions of large corporations. MICOM says these companies are now using data/voice networking devices to eliminate interoffice telephone and fax toll charges. In 1991 experts estimated businesses were using 12,000 data/voice networking devices worldwide, creating an 82 percent growth surge from the previous year and forging a $95 million market. The number of businesses using this kind of technology is anticipated to grow by 32 percent every year through 1996.
Marathon, which MICOM is now shipping, is the first product to send data, voice, fax and local-area network (LAN) bridge traffic to remote sites at a price lower than products that just transport data over long distances. The benefit of this ability to handle a variety of traffic is that phone and fax can travel free of toll-charges on low-speed lines (9,600 bps -- 64 Kbps) normally used to transmit computer data alone. Any company that has more than one business location can reduce its phone bill by thousands per year using Marathon.
Until recently, this technology was available only to large companies who could afford the expense of high-capacity communications lines. A base price of $1,750, however, makes Marathon affordable for small and mid-sized businesses. In fact, the product compares favorably in price to standard data-only networking equipment called "multiplexers."
"By incorporating voice and fax handling into the product, Marathon pays for itself with as little as one hour per day of toll calls between offices. There's really no reason to buy ordinary data communications equipment anymore," says Ken Guy, vice president of Corporate Strategy and Business Development for MICOM.
