NEW DAILY FLIGHTS FROM WASHINGTON, DC AND TAMPA ARE LATEST ADDITIONS TO INCREASED AIR SERVICE TO THE BAHAMAS

NEW YORK, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The introduction of USAir's daily direct service from Washington, DC to Nassau, via Tampa, and daily nonstop service from Tampa to Nassau, both commencing February 1, are the latest additions to increasing service to The Bahamas, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism announced today.
USAir's new service represents the only nonstop from Tampa to The Bahamas. The airline will operate the route with 128-passenger Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
Originating at Washington National airport, the new flight also introduces direct service from the capital to The Bahamas via Tampa, complementing existing direct service from Washington to The Bahamas via Philadelphia or Charlotte.
The daily flight will leave Washington, DC at 8:20 a.m., arriving in Tampa at 10:44 a.m. From Tampa, the flight departs at 11:45 a.m. and arrives at 12:59 p.m.
USAir has been serving The Bahamas since 1989 when it acquired Piedmont's routes to Nassau.
"USAir is a staunch supporter of The Bahamas' tourism industry", Bernard Drewery, USAir's District Sales Manager for Tampa explained. "We have been working closely with The Bahamas' tour operators and the travel agent community for the last four years to support tourism to The Bahamas".
The new flights from Washington and Tampa follow the recent introduction of nonstop service from Chicago, on American Trans Air, and from Indianapolis, on Funway Holidays Funjet, last October.
According to Senator The Honorable Brent Symonette, Minister of Tourism, The Bahamas Government is committed not only to introducing and expanding service from key U.S. markets but also to focusing on marketing the destination in regional areas.
"The Bahamas' commitment to these major regional U.S. markets is stronger than ever before and we are very pleased to welcome these new flights to add capacity to the strong service already in place from our other airline travel partners," the Minister said.
Packages to The Bahamas from Washington start at $359, including airfare, two nights' hotel accommodation and ground transfers. From Tampa, packages start from $239. Both packages are priced per person based on double occupancy.
