"Cray Research IRIS Explorer" Is Based On Advanced Silicon
EAGAN, Minn., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- A pioneering new product from Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) will allow scientists and engineers to design their own distributed, supercomputer-level software applications without specialized knowledge of computer programming, the company announced today.
The product, called Cray Research IRIS Explorer 1.0, provides a variety of modules -- software "building blocks" -- that appear on the user's workstation screen in the familiar form of visual icons. With a "mouse" and the power of a Cray Research supercomputer, users can quickly link selected icons to custom-build applications for their complex scientific and industrial computing problems. Cray Research IRIS Explorer also allows users to create new modules from existing software applications, said Bob Ewald, Cray Research executive vice president of development.
Cray Research has received three orders for the new software product and, based on preliminary discussions with other customers, anticipates strong demand for Cray Research IRIS Explorer, Ewald said.
The Cray Research IRIS Explorer product was developed in conjunction with Silicon Graphics, Inc., Mountain View, Calif., and is a supercomputer-level enhancement of Silicon Graphics' IRIS Explorer(TM) application-building software product introduced in July 1991, Ewald said. Applications created with Cray Research IRIS Explorer automatically operate in distributed processing networks containing Cray Research supercomputer systems and Silicon Graphics workstations packaged with the IRIS Explorer product.
The new Cray Research product automatically establishes network connections, logs into the Cray Research system, and transfers data and program control. Until now, Ewald said, developing high-performance applications for distributed processing networks has been a time- consuming task, often too complex for anyone but full-time computer programmers. "The Cray Research IRIS Explorer environment allows scientists and engineers to focus on solving problems and improving algorithms, by supplying higher-level programming structures," he said. "I was absolutely struck with how easy it is to use the Cray Research IRIS Explorer environment to create distributed processing applications," said Mike Bailey, manager of scientific visualization at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
The Cray Research IRIS Explorer product supports application- building in virtually all scientific and industrial areas, including computational chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, geophysical/seismic analysis, reservoir simulation, finite element analysis, medical imaging, remote sensing, meteorological analysis, and visualization.
