NEW CONTRACT BRINGS THERMO INSTRUMENT'S BOSTON HARBOR WORK
 TO MORE THAN $1 MILLION
WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) today announced that a new contract award for an environmental services subsidiary brings the value of its current projects related to Boston Harbor improvements to more than $1 million.
The company's TMA/Normandeau Associates subsidiary has been awarded a contract by Massport, the Massachusetts Port Authority, to assess the environmental impacts of dredging major sections of Boston Harbor, to identify disposal alternatives, and prepare an environmental impact report. The study is being conducted under a local cooperation agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Boston Harbor Improvement Project. Formal approval of the contract, valued at approximately $500,000, was made last week at a regular meeting of Massport directors in Boston.
Pamela Hall, president of TMA/Normandeau Associates, said, "We are pleased that our firm has again been selected to provide expertise in environmental science for an effort that has national prominence as well as local and regional importance."
The firm also is conducting studies as part of the $6 billion Boston Harbor cleanup project mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. TMA/Normandeau Associates currently is under contract to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) to develop physical and water quality models for Massachusetts Bay. The models will assist MWRA in assessing the environmental impacts caused by wastewater discharge through the Deer Island treatment plant's open ocean outfall.
TMA/Normandeau Associates, based in Bedford, N.H., provides environmental science consulting and contracting services to public- and private-sector clients throughout the U.S. The firm specializes in impact assessments, water and wetlands resources, aquatic toxicology and marine biology, and related disciplines associated with permitting and licensing.
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory-based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
