NEW COMPAQ NETWORK LASER PRINTERS DELIVER UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE AND HASSLE-FREE USE

 NEW COMPAQ NETWORK LASER PRINTERS
 DELIVER UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE AND HASSLE-FREE USE
 NEW YORK, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), building on the strength of its leadership in PC networking, today unveiled network laser printers. The COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 and COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 15 offer unparalleled performance and an unprecedented combination of breakthrough printer innovations and advanced networking features not found in any other printer products. They are designed for hassle-free use in a network and provide uncommon value as a result of their aggressive pricing.
 The COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 page-per-minute (PPM) and 15 PPM printers, with PostScript Level 2 software from Adobe and PCL 5 emulation (the two leading printer languages), provide exceptional throughput and a superior combination of direct network connectivity, unmatched paper capacities (up to 1500 pages) and variety of sizes (up to 11" x 17" for CAD and desktop publishing), ease-of-operation, remote management capabilities and high-resolution graphics (up to 800 x 400 dots-per-inch or up to 320,000 dots per square inch) required for demanding network and graphics environments.
 With today's introduction, Compaq is delivering the world's fastest all-around desktop printer(1) -- the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 -- which is twice as fast on average as the Hewlett Packard LaserJet IIISi in PostScript applications.(2) The COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 15 is on average 50 percent faster. NOTE: (1) on average, fastest desktop printer in PostScript language applications; (2) 100% faster PostScript printer output than HP IIISi running business applications in 300 x 300 resolution
 The COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 is the first desktop printer to offer a 1500-sheet capacity without requiring awkward external devices, thanks to its incorporation of three COMPAQ TwinTrays, which hold 500 sheets each. The new printers also connect directly to Novell and Apple networks, and up to five interfaces can be active at the same time. Direct connectivity is supported via Ethernet, Token Ring and AppleTalk interfaces without the need for a dedicated print server, conserving system costs and eliminating support requirements.
 In addition, the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ printers are the first to reliably sense and switch automatically between the two leading printer languages without any user intervention. Compaq is also introducing an internal FAX modem option that allows users to send PostScript-quality graphics over phone lines in sizes up to 11" x 17". For permanent storage of PostScript fonts for easy accessibility by all users on a network, optional 1- and 2-megabyte programmable font modules and an internal 60- megabyte hard drive are available.
 The first products unveiled by the recently-announced Compaq Peripherals Division, the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 and the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 15 are available immediately with suggested list prices of $5,499 and $3,999 respectively.
 Compaq president and chief executive officer Eckhard Pfeiffer said, "Today's announcement of COMPAQ PAGEMARQ network printers, which are a true leap forward in printer technology and performance, demonstrates our ability to direct our proven technical leadership and resources to address promising new market opportunities and deliver the best value in our industry. We're leveraging not only our engineering and marketing expertise with these innovative new printers, but our considerable experience in network testing and integration, as well our strong distribution and established customer support programs."
 With the introduction of the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ printers, Compaq enters one of the fastest-growing segments of the printer industry -- the network printer market. This market segment enjoys a compound annual growth rate of 25%, four times the growth rate of other segments of a worldwide printer market which is expected to reach $30 billion by 1995.
 The COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 was designed for large departmental networks with more than 20 users, who require speed and robust paper handling. This need was previously addressed only through large, expensive console printers. COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 15 is suitable for performance-conscious users in the demanding CAD/CAE or graphics arts applications as well as value-conscious users in medium to large workgroup environments.
 Over 80 percent of network printers are purchased through computer resellers; another 15 percent are purchased through Value Added Resellers (VARs) or systems integrators. COMPAQ PAGEMARQ will be distributed through the Compaq worldwide network of resellers, systems integrators, distributors and value-added resellers. Compaq also will market and support printer consumables, such as print cartridges, through resellers and office supply distributors as well as directly through a toll-free Compaq telephone number as a convenience. Compaq also introduced innovative customer service programs in support of its new printer products. Service and Support
 COMPAQ PAGEMARQ will be serviced and supported through a number of innovative programs, including:
 -- Free Standard, One-Year On-Site Limited Warranty;
 -- Toll-Free Telephone Support, enabling users to resolve problems directly with the help of a printer and/or networking specialist (1-800- 345-1518 in the U.S.);
 -- QuickSource Self-Help Utility, available free to COMPAQ network printer customers and service providers, is easy-to-use software that answers product questions, troubleshoots problems and offers on-line help using artificial intelligence (a more sophisticated, fee-based version will be available in the fourth quarter to self-maintainers and service providers);
 -- Electronic Software Delivery Service, which allows users to access and download COMPAQ software and printer information through the online service, CompuServe, 24 hours a day;
 -- Automated FAX Response System, which enables users to request information via FAX through a series of telephone prompts, 24 hours a day; and
 -- BackPAQ Recycling Program, through which Compaq recycles users' print cartridges at no cost to them. Users can call 1-800-524-9859 in the U.S.
 Specially-priced Apple configurations will be available in November that include an AppleTalk interface, Apple-specific drivers and documentation and Adobe Type Manager for Macintosh screen fonts, with suggested list prices of $5,699 and $4,199.
 The COMPAQ PAGEMARQ 20 and 15 use advanced print engines made by Fuji Xerox and sold by Xerox International Partners. The printers are assembled in the U.S. and Europe. These engines have been customized through a joint technology exchange to incorporate COMPAQ innovations, including the COMPAQ TwinTray paper tray design, an exclusive control panel, paper output at 500 sheets and an output full sensor. Leveraging its ten years of electronics expertise, Compaq designed and produces the controller boards for the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ network laser printers using Advanced Micro Devices' 29000 RISC processors. Compaq partnered with Adobe Systems Incorporated to produce COMPAQ PAGEMARQ network printers using PostScript Level 2, PostScript FAX capability, sensing and switching between languages and jointly-developed compression/decompression and network connectivity technology.
 In addition, COMPAQ PAGEMARQ was ergonomically designed to offer quiet operation, a smaller footprint than printers with similar capabilities and executive desktop styling to ensure an easy fit in any office environment.
 The Compaq Peripherals Division has filed and been awarded a number of printer patents for its one-of-a-kind product features. For example, in the COMPAQ PAGEMARQ is the patented COMPAQ TwinTray, a motorized paper tray that holds a ream of letter- or A4-sized paper (500 sheets) in two stacks without adding extra height to the printer. When the first stack has been depleted, the second stack is automatically loaded into position without user intervention.
 Compaq announced its worldwide Peripherals Division in June of this year. The Peripherals division is devoted to the development and marketing of COMPAQ printers and printer-related products and has direct responsibility for the design, development, manufacture, marketing and support of COMPAQ PAGEMARQ and subsequent printer and printer- related products.
