NEW CLEAN-EXHAUST NATURAL GAS VEHICLES TO SET PACE FOR CHARLOTTE MARATHON

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The first vehicles delivered to the Carolinas manufactured to run solely on clean-burning natural gas will set the pace for runners in tomorrow's 1993 Charlotte Observer Marathon.
Piedmont Natural Gas Company (NYSE: PNY) is donating to the marathon the use of four new GMC Sierra pickup trucks that are among the first production vehicles manufactured by General Motors that operate only on natural gas. Natural gas vehicles emit virtually no harmful exhaust compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles, so the front-runners will breathe more pollution-free air during the race.
The total of six natural gas-powered service trucks to be used as "pace cars" will drive ahead of the runners to clear their path and show them the route in all of the races being run in conjunction with the marathon. Some of the natural gas pace vehicles will also transport members of the electronic and print news media covering the race.
General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have begun manufacturing natural gas-powered vehicles in response to the markets being created by recent federal and state clean-air legislation that mandate phased-in emissions standards for fleet vehicle owners. Natural gas vehicles also reduce fuel and maintenance operating costs.
Vehicle tailpipe emissions are the primary cause of air pollution problems in the United States. Charlotte is ranked twenty-second in the nation among cities with air quality deficiencies by the Environmental Protection Agency.
