NEW CHRYSLER SEDANS COMPETE HEAD-TO-HEAD AGAINST JAPANESE MANUFACTURERS

 NEW CHRYSLER SEDANS COMPETE HEAD-TO-HEAD
 AGAINST JAPANESE MANUFACTURERS

California Designs and Market Research Lead to New World-Class Sedans
WHAT: The worldwide unveiling of Chrysler's 1993 mid-size
 (LH) sedans:
 Chrysler Concorde
 Dodge Intrepid
 Eagle Vision
 CALIFORNIA FOCUS:
The cars were extensively researched in California
and are aimed directly at the Southern California
market. Two concept cars that were the direct
predecessors of the LH cars were both designed in
Chrysler's California studios in Carlsbad, Calif.
 WHEN: Wednesday, Jan. 8
 5-8 p.m.
WHERE: Los Angeles Convention Center, Main Hall
 Chrysler Exhibit Area, M-2
 Dodge Exhibit Area, M-12
 THE VEHICLES:
The LH sedans begin production this summer, competing
 in the Honda Accord/Toyota Camry/Nissan Maxima/Acura
Legend market segment. The vehicles go on sale in
 September 1992.
They represent the world's first mass-produced car
 with "cab-forward" design proportions.
This dramatic new design moves the wheels of the
vehicle to its corners and extends the base of the
windshield over the centerline of the wheels. The
 result:
 Greater safety
 Better visability
 More interior room
 More cargo room
 Better ingress and egress
Along with the new Viper and Grand Cherokee, the LH
sedans are Chrysler's first evidence of the "cultural
revolution" that has completely changed the company's
 vehicle development process. These American-made
cars were conceived, designed and developed much like
the best from Japan. They were developed to world
-class standards in 3 1/4 years, which is equal to
the current Japanese vehicle development cycle time.
The car is world-class in every respect. One of the
target cars for the LH was the Acura Legend Sedan at
a price point $10,000 less. The sedans feature a
brand-new, overhead cam V-6 engine developing more
 than 215 horsepower and 225 pounds-per-feet of
 torque.
 CHRYSLER SPOKESMEN:
Tom Stallkamp is leading the LH platform group to
 develop world-class cars in 3 1/4 years.
-- Another large accomplishment -- and something that
has aided the $3 billion cost reduction effort at
Chrysler -- is that he is the executive at Chrysler
who has worked with suppliers to find cost-saving
measures together, not by asking the supplier base to
cut prices. These actions have netted the
 corporation $150 million so far.
Glenn Gardner's is Chrysler's "man in the trenches"
with the LH platform team. He made the platform team
concept work in its first application on a mass
 production car.
-- He spent five years working directly with
Mitsubishi as chairman of the joint manufacturing
facility, Diamond-Star Motors in Illinois, that
produces the Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse and
 Plymouth Laser.
