NEW CHRYSLER SEDAN, BMW WAGON AMONG BEST CARS FOR '93, AAA SAYS

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Chrysler Corp.'s new LH sedans and BMW's first station wagon for the U.S. market are among the best new cars in their price class for 1993, according to the American Automobile Association.
The Dodge Intrepid ES is one of the three new models from Chrysler featuring a cab forward design that results in a more roomy interior. The BMW 525i Touring is the only station wagon to make AAA's list. Nine other models round out AAA's new car selections for 1993.
Details on the association's top new car selections will be published in AAA membership publications and are available in AAA AutoTest -- the motoring federation's third annual review of new car models. For 1993, AutoTest rates 121 new models based on AAA's 20-point evaluations.
Ranked highest in their price class by AAA were the Ford Escort LX and the Toyota Tercel DX (tie), under $10,000; Geo Prizm LSi, $10,000- $15,000; Dodge Intrepid ES, $15,000-$20,000; Oldsmobile Eighty Eight LS, $20,000-$25,000; Saab 9000 CS Turbo, $25,000 to $30,000; Lexus SC 300, $30,000 to $35,000; BMW 525i Touring (station wagon), $35,000-$40,000; Cadillac Seville STS, $40,000 to $45,000; Lexus LS 400, $45,000-$50,000; and Mercedes 400SEL, over $50,000.
"Of the many fine automobiles available to new car buyers, AAA has judged these 11 models as the best in their price category," said George Giek, managing director of AAA Automotive Engineering. "They are set apart from the competition by the most compelling combination of engineering, workmanship, styling, comfort and convenience."
AAA rated vehicles on the basis of a system that assigns from one to 10 points in 20 categories including acceleration, braking, comfort, convenience, fuel economy, handling and workmanship.
The total number of points represents a car's overall score with a 200-point maximum possible score. The Lexus LS400 scored highest with 177 points.
"Car buyers' needs and preferences vary and motorists should consider AAA's list as only a starting point in their search for a new car," Giek said. "The best way to avoid wasting time and money in the crowded, new-car marketplace is to know which cars will meet your needs and expectations before entering a dealership."
Cars evaluated for AAA AutoTest include all price ranges and most popular models. Each review highlights the car's best and worst features, its specifications, price, safety features and performance. There are easy-to-read tables, a point-rating system and two pages of text and photographs of each car.
The book also contains advice on selecting a new car and information on safety, ecology, test driving, negotiating the best deal, auto maintenance, warranties and resolving disputes.
AAA AutoTest is available through participating AAA Clubs and bookstores. The cover price is $12.95.
AAA is a not-for-profit federation of 145 motor clubs with more than 1,000 offices providing its nearly 34 million members in the United States and Canada with travel, insurance, financial and auto-related services.
