NEW BRITISH AID.

The British Government has given volcano-stricken Montserrat a new grant of 1.8 million pounds sterling that will help to finance a housing project, says Chief Information Officer Herman Sargeant, reports CANA (July 21, 1998). A total of 1.2 million pounds was earmarked for the second phase of the "Self-Build Housing Grant Project" in the north, the only part of this British-dependent territory that is considered safe from the Soufriere Hills volcano. The rest of the funds will be allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and the Environment to help strengthen its capacity in housing and land policy management.
