NEW BELL ATLANTIC INTEREXCHANGE ACCESS TARIFF EXTENDS AVAILABILITY OF ISDN

NEW BELL ATLANTIC INTEREXCHANGE ACCESS TARIFF
 EXTENDS AVAILABILITY OF ISDN
ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic today announced it has filed a tariff with the FCC that will extend the availability of ISDN beyond its local telephone exchange areas.
The tariff, proposed to take effect Sept. 20, provides for access to ISDN by long-distance carriers, making it available to more customers over the public switched network.
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) technology offers simultaneous voice, video, data and graphics over a single telephone line.
Bell Atlantic's local telephone companies have been equipping their switching offices with ISDN capability for the past few years as part of an aggressive network modernization effort.
The companies, however, can provide ISDN only within local telephone exchange areas called LATAs, which were established as a result of the AT&T divestiture to distinguish local phone service from long-distance (interexchange) service.
By providing for the interconnection of ISDN with long distance carriers, the Bell Atlantic tariff broadens the availability of ISDN.
"We're pleased at the prospect of teaming up with the long- distance carriers to increase customer accessibility to ISDN," said Regis Filtz, Bell Atlantic Network Services, Inc., vice president- carrier access services.
"The true value of ISDN will be realized only when it is made widely available. Our tariff filing represents one more step in that direction."
Filtz said interexchange access to ISDN would be available initially in parts of northern and southern New Jersey. The tariff provides for interexchange access to ISDN at either 56 or 64 kilobits per second at no additional charge over Feature Group D switched access rates.
Bell Atlantic's ISDN initiatives coincide with National ISDN-1, a movement by the nation's local telephone companies, long-distance carriers and hardware and software developers to set uniform ISDN specifications and to speed the deployment of ISDN services nationwide.
The National ISDN-1 network will be launched officially on Nov. 16, beginning a week-long celebration known as TRIP '92 (TRanscontinental ISDN Project '92).
