 NEW ASSEMBLER AVAILABLE FROM IBM
 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- International Business

Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) today announced the general availability this week of High Level Assembler/MVS & VM & VSE, bringing new speed, accuracy and efficiency to one of the oldest, but most critical, programming-language technologies used by tens of thousands of customers worldwide.
 Programming languages create the basic instructions for computer operating systems and software applications such as data bases, spreadsheets, word processing or accounting. Introduced in the fifties, the Assembler language helps programmers create applications that run with maximum efficiency.
 Today, thousands of companies use the reliable Assembler language as the bedrock of many of their key computer applications. But the number of programmers trained in Assembler is shrinking, leaving customers worried about the viability of their applications and putting increased work pressures on skilled Assembler programmers.
 IBM's new High Level Assembler helps alleviate both those situations by delivering greatly enhanced and improved support for these programmers. It increases their productivity and maximizes the value of their skills, which are critical to the success of a customer's business.
 "We expect this to improve our productivity enormously," said David Weintraub of the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory. "We're especially excited by the additional functions of the new release."
 The many features of IBM's new High Level Assembler permit more rapid and reliable development of new applications and give customers the ability to change applications with greater assurance of stability and quality as their business needs change.
 High Level Assembler provides greater compatibility of facilities and support across IBM's mainframe operating systems -- Multiple Virtual Storage (MVS), Virtual Machine (VM) and Virtual Storage Extended/Enterprise Systems Architecture (VSE/ESA)(A).
 The new system gives programmers the means of accessing tools such as librarians and debuggers, which give greater control over applications and reduce the number of errors before they are introduced into the system. Extensive support for routine maintenance tasks such as cross referencing and tracking the use of data spares programmers time spent on routine chores and mechanical details.
 Among the product's other new features:
 -- Improved, expanded and added diagnostics help programmers spot and correct errors before they become part of a customer's software portfolio;
 -- Information that provides "at-a-glance" summaries of key elements of the system, including file origin and control functions;
 -- Language enhancements that improve usability, reliability and efficiency;
 The new High Level Assembler will be available Friday, June 26, for a monthly license charge of $28 to $991, depending on the processor used.
