NEW ASHLAND PETROLEUM UNIT WILL PRODUCE HIGH OCTANE GASOLINE AT CATLETTSBURG REFINERY

ASHLAND, Ky., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Ashland Petroleum Company has begun production from its new $75 million Continuous Catalyst Regenerator Naphtha Reforming Unit (CCR) at its Catlettsburg, Ky., refinery, the company announced today.
The new unit will increase the refinery's production of high-octane gasoline by about 8 percent and will produce hydrogen needed for the production of the refinery's new, low-sulfur diesel fuel.
Roy Whitt, refinery superintendent, said the new unit will have the capacity to produce 16,500 barrels-a-day of high-octane gasoline. The hydrogen will be used in the refinery's new $90 million, 40,000 barrels-a-day Distillate Desulfurizer (DDS), which produces new low-sulfur diesel fuel used by on-highway vehicles.
The CCR also is will upgrade the refinery's reforming process technology to improve refinery efficiency. The unit converts low-octane gasoline into higher octane stocks that are suited for blending into finished gasoline.
"All of this combined will result in more efficient production of gasoline, which improves the overall operation of the refinery," Whitt said. "The CCR also regenerates -- or recycles -- catalyst on line. This will allow the refinery to operate longer production runs, have better product yields and experience less downtime for unit maintenance."
The CCR and DDS are two of seven new Catlettsburg refinery projects announced in January 1992, that committed Ashland Petroleum Company to invest more than $200 million through 1994 to produce cleaner burning fuels and further reduce plant emissions. Similar investments have been made at the company's other refineries located in Canton, Ohio, and St. Paul Park, Minn.
Based in Ashland, Ashland Petroleum Company is the largest operating division of Ashland Oil, Inc. (NYSE: ASH), and is engaged in petroleum refining, wholesale marketing and transportation from the East Coast through the Ohio River Valley and Upper Midwest.
