NEW AREA CODE SELECTED FOR SOUTH TEXAS

NEW AREA CODE SELECTED FOR SOUTH TEXAS
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning next year, a new

area code -- 210 -- will serve telephone customers in the southern tip of Texas, Southwestern Bell Telephone (NYSE: SBC) announced today.
Changing from the current 512 area code to the new 210 area code on Nov. 1, 1992, will be all communities in the San Antonio and Brownsville service areas, including those served by Southwestern Bell as well as other telephone companies. Austin and Corpus Christi telephone service areas will retain the 512 area code.
The changeover will take place in two stages. For a six-month period (Nov. 1, 1992, through May 2, 1993), customers who accidentally dial the 512 area code to reach telephone numbers in the 210 code will still have their calls automatically switched to the 210 number.
"The six months will give callers more time to become adjusted to the new area code," said Marc West, Southwestern Bell's area manager-network administration center in Austin. "For a few weeks after the adjustment period ends, callers still using 512 when dialing numbers in the 210 area code will hear a recorded message instructing them to dial the new code. Before the conversion takes place, we will provide information to all of our customers."
West said the new area code is being established now, "Or we will run out of telephone numbers in the near future.
"Population growth and the rapid growth of new telecommunications services are the main reasons the telephone number supply is being exhausted.
"By announcing the change this early, we are giving telephone customers more than a year to plan for their stationery, business cards and other printed materials; to reprogram telephone numbers for automatic dialers; to make changes in business telephone systems and other devices; and to inform friends and relatives."
West pointed out that no change other than the customer's area code will occur. The customer's seven-digit telephone number will not change, nor will long distance rates and dialing methods change.
Southwestern Bell Telephone is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corp. and provides telecommunications services to more than nine million customers in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. -0-
