NEW AIR CONDITIONER TECHNOLOGY GIVES WATSCO SIGNIFICANT COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

MIAMI, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Watsco, Inc. (AMEX: WSOA, WSOB) announced today that in conjunction with its major supplier, Rheem Manufacturing, Inc., it will introduce a new generation of residential central air conditioners that are substantially more quiet and more durable than traditional models, providing the company with a significant competitive advantage.
Watsco is the nation's largest distributor of Rheem Manufacturing, Inc.'s line of residential central air conditioners, which is being converted to use Copeland scroll compressors instead of the reciprocating compressors traditionally used. The scroll compressor is substantially quieter, which addresses the number one complaint that homeowners have had with more energy efficient but noisier central air conditioners that have been introduced in recent years to meet federally mandated energy efficiency ratings. In addition, the scroll compressor has proven to be better suited for use in high-end high-efficiency central air conditioners because of the scrolls' greater durability, which should also provide consumers with reduced service requirements and longer product life.
"This exciting new technological advantage should help propel our strategy of gaining market share in the Sunbelt through internal growth," said Albert H. Nahmad, Watsco Chairman and Chief Executive. "Rheem is the only manufacturer utilizing this technology on 10 and 11 SEER air conditioners, which constitute 80-90% of the market for residential central air conditioners. And given that industry analysts estimate that it will take other suppliers 18-24 months to introduce similar technology, we believe that Watsco will enjoy a significant competitive advantage through 1995."
Watsco said that it plans to introduce aggressive regional advertising and promotion programs to tie in to the national program that Rheem plans as part of the new product introduction in the heavy 1994 selling season.
Watsco, Inc., an emerging growth company, is the nation's largest independent distributor of residential central air conditioners and a leading manufacturer of products for climate control, environmental protection and energy conservation. Revenues have grown from $15 million in 1987 to a current annual rate of approximately $250 million.
