NEVADA POWER FILES TO RECOVER ENERGY COSTS

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Nevada Power Co. (NYSE: NVP) filed a request today with the Public Service Commission of Nevada (PSCN) to recover energy costs of $46.2 million. The proposed increase represents a 7.9 percent overall increase in revenues. If approved as submitted, there will be no effect on earnings.
The request is comprised of two elements. First is a request for $39.9 million to adjust the authorized cost of energy for the 12 months beginning March 1, 1993. Actual costs for energy during the coming year will be compared to this rate, and any deferral will be collected or refunded in future filings. Higher costs for energy are directly related to power purchased from qualified facilities (QFs). Nevada Power currently purchases up to 175 megawatts from two local QFs. The second element of the request is to recover $6.3 million in fuel and purchased power costs that were experienced and deferred from Dec. 1 to Nov. 30, 1992.
If the request is approved as filed, the rates will be in effect for the 12 months beginning March 1, 1993. Under Nevada's deferred energy procedure, electric utility companies may submit an application periodically to either increase or decrease energy rates to match changes in fuel and purchased power costs.
Nevada Power Co. is an electric utility providing service to approximately 380,000 customers in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. Even with the proposed increase, Nevada Power Company's rates will remain among the lowest in the Western United States.
