NEVADA POWER/LADWP ANNOUNCE TRANSMISSION PROJECT

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Nevada Power Co. (NYSE: NVP) announced today plans for one of the most important construction projects in its history, one that will provide substantial benefits to its customers. The company plans to construct two 500 kV transmission lines in order to improve reliability to its system and gain access to economical power from other states. Called the Marketplace-Allen Transmission (MAT) Project, it would be initially owned by Nevada Power and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
"Other utility companies from out of state were interested in building these lines. We felt it was important for Nevada Power to take the lead, and secure the benefits for our customers in Southern Nevada," said Vice President Bill Gehlen. "MAT will be a highway link between us and other utilities. Besides improving our reliability, it will give us access to new resources and greatly expanded opportunities to find the lowest priced power for our customers during the hot summer months." Air conditioning accounts for nearly half of Nevada Power's energy demand during the summer.
MAT is designed to minimize environmental impacts through the extreme southern portion of Nevada, including the Sunrise Mountain area and the city of Henderson. The project will limit the number of transmission lines and help avoid the construction of new generating plants in the Las Vegas Valley.
MAT will connect directly to an existing substation northeast of Las Vegas and a future substation in the Eldorado Valley south of Las Vegas. In addition, MAT may interconnect with other proposed transmission projects.
If approved, the total cost of the 53-mile project is approximately $121 million and could be operational by 1998. Nevada Power will seek approval from the Public Service Commission of Nevada, the Bureau of Land Management and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
