NETWORK WORLD LAUNCHES NEW SERIES OF TECHNICAL SEMINARS
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Network World, the premier networking publication, today announced it is launching the Network World Technical Seminars, a series of seminars designed to help network professionals keep current on critical networking issues. The first seminar, on local area network (LAN) security, will be offered in eight major cities around the U.S. starting on Nov. 18 in Boston.
"Our readers told us they need more information on specific areas of technology," said Bill Reinstein, director of special projects at Network World. "Our intense, locally available, one-day seminars respond to that need by providing a convenient and efficient way for network professionals to keep current on critical networking issues and to make their networks more effective." Focus on LAN Security
The focus on security in the initial Network World Technical Seminar reflects the fact that LANs and the information they manage are not only key corporate assets but also provide competitive advantages. "Security is a real hot button for our readers," said Reinstein. "As more users have access to departmental and corporate data, keeping networks secure has become more difficult." The LAN Security Seminar is designed to help attendees understand the scope of the LAN security problem, assess their own networks' liability, determine ways to overcome and prevent security problems, and develop a security policy.
Dr. David Stang, founder and director of research for the International Computer Security Association and a recognized authority on LAN security, will present the seminar. "Anyone who has overall responsibility for network security will benefit from Dr. Stang's combination of interactive presentation and hands-on exercises" said Reinstein.
The seminar will cover topics such as:
-- Assessing the risks to network security
 -- Network operating systems security
 -- Preventing PC security problems
-- Controlling access to the network
-- Fact vs. fiction: virus dangers to NetWare(R) LANs
-- Authentication, encryption, and transmission protection
 -- Fault tolerance
-- Developing a model security policy
The $350 registration fee for the LAN Security Seminar includes a 300-page guide to computer security as well as luncheon, morning and afternoon refreshments, and a post-seminar reception where attendees can meet their peers. Dates and locations for the LAN Security Seminar are:
 11/18/92 Boston 2/8/93 Los Angeles

 12/4/92 Chicago 3/8/93 Atlanta
