NETWORK SYSTEMS SUPPLIES NETWORKING EQUIPMENT TO NEW JERSEY BELL FOR METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK AT FORT MONMOUTH

WASHINGTON, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- At the INTEROP Conference here, Network Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCO) announced today that it is supplying its 6000 Series multiprotocol bridge-routers to New Jersey Bell for the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) being installed for the U.S. Army at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Initially, 21 routers -- models 6614 and 6617 -- are being installed as part of a fiber optic backbone network using the Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) standard, with another 12 planned for future installation. The network will link departmental LANs, computer rooms, and WAN access nodes all over Fort Monmouth with each other and with other Army locations at Camp Evans in New Jersey; with interexchange carriers providing connectivity to Vint Hill Farms in Warrenton, Va.; and Chambersburg, Penn.
The FDDI network will be the principal means of providing data communications at Fort Monmouth; it will support electronic mail, transfer of CAD/CAM drawings, and access to the Defense Data Network (DDN). A minimum tenfold improvement in speed over any previous non- contiguous network segments is expected, at a minimum. The increased productivity enabled by the network is an important element in the Army's plan to support essential programs while downsizing.
The organizations to be linked include three Program Executive Offices, 19 Project Management Offices, the Chaplain Center and School, the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, military personnel, military payroll, other tenant organizations and several special staff offices.
Organizations will pay for their connection from their local area network to the MAN, and for maintenance based on usage. The network usage will be monitored with the Usage-Sensitive Billing Package from Network Systems, and the network will be managed with the help of Open Management System (OMS), also provided by Network Systems.
"Network Systems is proud to be chosen by the New Jersey Bell as the supplier of bridge-routers for this network," said Warren Pillsbury, vice president of marketing. "New Jersey Bell joins a growing number of other carriers who have teamed with us to offer public data services."
