NETWORK SYSTEMS GREENLINE SELECTED FOR SUNGARD METROCENTERS

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Systems (NASDAQ-NMS: NSCO) and SunGard(R) Recovery Services today announced SunGard's selection of Network Systems' Greenline(R) channel-extension technology for its MetroCenters(TM).
The SunGard MetroCenter is a multipurpose facility which can support the testing and recovery needs of computer operations and other types of work groups requiring a local shared facility solution. SunGard is opening MetroCenters in major metropolitan areas throughout the United States. MetroCenter components include, but are not limited to:
 -- State-of-the-art Remote Command Centers
 -- PCs
-- IBM, DEC, and Tandem controllers and terminals
-- Access to SunGard's centralized voice recovery system
 -- Furnished workstations
 -- Voice lines
-- Network equipment and access infrastructure
 -- Copiers and facsimile machines
The MetroCenter Remote Command Center is capable of supporting multiple, simultaneous subscriber hotsite tests or recoveries without the need for subscriber employees to travel to a SunGard MegaCenter(R).
SunGard has opened MetroCenters in Boston, Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas and Los Angeles. Each facility will accommodate between 50 and 150 subscriber employees for testing or recovery.
Network Systems' Greenline technology is a recent addition to its RDS(R) (Remote Device Support) product line. Greenline requires no host-resident software, and has the following significant features:
 -- FDDI support
-- Support for multiple T3/E3 (44.7 Mbps) circuits
-- Independence of IBM operating systems
-- Load sharing across T1/E1 communication lines
-- Support for multiple IBM Block Mux channels
-- Support for multiple FIPS channels (Unisys, Bull, Cray)
"We have had a working relationship with Network Systems for a number of years," said John Sensenich, director of Product Development at SunGard. "SunGard's selection of Greenline reflects our confidence that Network Systems understands our MetroCenter objectives, and will continue to support emerging technologies."
"Greenline provides unique flexibility for SunGard's MetroCenters," said Warren Pillsbuty, vice president, marketing, for Network Systems. "The 7200 controllers at the MegaCenters and the 7250 controllers at the MetroCenters support Greenline, and can support additional interfaces (Ethernet, token-ring, FDDI) as full-feature bridge/routers."
SunGard Recovery Services provides alternate site backup, testing and recovery services for IBM, DEC, Hewlett-Packard, Prime, Stratus, Tandem and Unisys computer installations; recovery planning software; and related consulting and educational services.
Network Systems Corporation, based in Minneapolis, is an industry leader in networking solutions that integrate high-based and LAN-based computing.
