NETMANAGE SHIPS FIRST WINDOWS TCP/IP STACK COMPLIANT WITH
 'WINDOWS SOCKETS' SPECIFICATION
CUPERTINO, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- NetManage Inc. today started shipping NEWT and NEWT-SDK version 3.0, the first TCP/IP communications stack and development kit compliant with the Windows Sockets API Standard announced today by Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, NetManage and over 20 other vendors.
Windows Sockets API (previously WinSock API)
The new Windows Sockets API specification defines a standard interface between a Microsoft Windows application and a TCP/IP protocol stack. These specifications were previously known by the code name WinSock API.
The Windows Socket API is based on NetManage original specifications that were submitted to the standard committee. The underlying technology, including message-driven asynchronous communications, was first shipped by NetManage in September of 1990. Until today NetManage is still the only provider of 100 percent Windows DLL (Dynamic Link Library) stack in the market.
Zvi Alon, president of NetManage, said, "It is a good feeling to know that the industry has officially recognized our Windows TCP/IP technology as an industry standard. The customers have been telling us all the way that they want TCP/IP technology that is 100 percent Windows and 100 percent DLL and that is what we delivered for the last two years.
"Since the new standard is based on our technology we had to make only superficial changes to NEWT and NEWT-SDK and are proud to ship today the first Windows Socket compliant product," added Alon.
 100 Percent DLL
NEWT is the only TCP/IP package in the market based 100 percent on a Windows Dynamic Link Library (DLL) and not a TSR. The DLL is loaded into memory only when required, in contrast to a TSR program which resides in the memory at all times, consuming between 80K to 150K of precious DOS base memory.
Focusing on the technology, Dan Geisler, director of marketing for NetManage, said that "users should still be careful about selecting their TCP/IP stack. The fact that a stack is compliant with Windows Socket specifications still does not make it a true Windows product. Users should make sure that the stack they purchase is 100 percent DLL and not a DLL interface to a TSR based stack."
 Built-in Network Management
Every copy of NEWT comes with a built-in SNMP agent, making it "network management ready" out of the box. In addition to a system agent, and a Windows agent, NEWT includes an SNMP DLL that allows additional agents to be registered, making it an extensible agent.
 Development Tools Available Now
NEWT-SDK is a comprehensive software development kit for Windows TCP/IP communications protocol. This is the first TCP/IP package developed specifically for Windows (not converted from DOS). This software development kit offers the programmer full support of the new Windows Socket API. The NEWT-SDK is compatible with a variety of programming languages and Windows development systems that permit access to DLLs.
Applications developed using NEWT-SDK will be compatible with Windows Sockets stacks from any other vendor. Starting today, developers need buy only one development kit to write applications to Windows Sockets compliant stacks. NEWT-SDK that is shipping today from NetManage gives developers a six- to nine-month head start in getting their products to market.
In addition to the Windows Socket, NEWT-SDK facilitates development using the FTP, SMTP and SNMP DLLs.
 Upgrade Path Available
Current users of NEWT TCP/IP software can upgrade to take full advantage of the powerful new features of NEWT by purchasing the NEWT Upgrade.
This announcement follows the announcement of a technology licensing deal with IBM (April 28, 1992) and the joint demonstration with Microsoft of Chameleon NT for the Windows NT operating system at Comdex Spring in early April. In addition, ChameleonNFS, the first NFS client and server, started shipping in May 1992.
NEWT and NEWT-SDK run on both Windows 3.0 and 3.1.
NEWT-SDK price is $500 at quantity 1. Price of NEWT is $60 at quantity of 100. Both products are now shipping.
