NESTLE CHOCOLATE & CONFECTIONS PARTNERS WITH UNITED WAY OF AMERICA TO SUPPORT AND EMPOWER YOUTH

 MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- Nestle Chocolate & Confections will join hands in an unprecedented partnership with the United Way of America to strengthen the foundation of its two-year-old Nestle Chocolate Very Best in Youth Program(TM).
 The program is designed to empower young people to make decisions and actively address community concerns.
 Details of the new alliance will be unveiled by Nestle Chocolate & Confections and the United Way of America at the annual Very Best in Youth Conference on Friday, Nov. 20, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Ritz Carlton, 4375 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, Calif.
 The conference theme, "Partners Empowering America's Youth," will bring together young people from across the country to share the successes of their community service efforts and discuss 1993 plans.
 Through the Nestle Chocolate Very Best in Youth Program(TM), young people in 15 U.S. cities are awarded $10,000 grants to put toward community service projects which they choose and implement themselves. The grants are awarded to a collaboration of local youth-serving organizations -- providing an opportunity for a diverse group of young people to work together.
 "This alliance demonstrates Nestle Chocolate & Confections' commitment to support youth, and to help young people be the very best they can be," said Frank Arthofer, president of Nestle Chocolate & Confections. "Supporting youth is now part of our national agenda. We have, and will continue, to support it," he added.
 United Way's History:
 The United Way has a proven track record in managing youth leadership programs and providing skills training; however, this is the first time the organization has joined in such a partnership with a major corporation to support a national youth program.
 The Nestle Chocolate~United Way alliance will foster more successful youth collaboration and provide more local ownership and resources in each city. Team-building and collaboration workshops will be held, and program coordinators will offer ongoing guidance to help young people stay on-track with their projects.
 "We believe the United Way's local staff resources will provide day-to-day focus for youth participants, enhance their understanding of how community problems are solved and encourage increased program participation," said Elaine Chao, president of the United Way of America.
 1992 Nestle Chocolate Very Best in Youth Project Highlights:
 Young people, involved in the program, are addressing serious community issues. Youth in Minneapolis organized and held an educational and cultural carnival in conjunction with the city's celebration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus discovering America.
 L.A. Clippers' Kiki Vandewegh and Crunch, the mascot for the Minnesota Timberwolves, were on hand to distribute audiotape packets designed to promote awareness about HIV.
