 NELSON, ROLLWAGEN ELECTED TO ST. PAUL COMPANIES BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 ST. PAUL, Minn., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- At their annual meeting today, the shareholders of The St. Paul Companies (NYSE: SPC) elected Glen D. Nelson, M.D., and John A. Rollwagen as new members of the corporation's board of directors.
 Nelson is vice chairman of Medtronic, Inc., a manufacturer of biomedical devices. At Medtronic, he is responsible for direction of the company's neurological business, corporate development, ventures, science and technology, and corporate communications.
 Prior to joining Medtronic in 1986, Nelson served for two years as chairman and chief executive officer of American Medcenters, Inc.
 From 1975 to 1986, he was chairman of Park Nicollet Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he split his time between patient care as a surgeon and service as chief executive officer. He joined Park Nicollet as a staff surgeon in 1969.
 Nelson is a director of Medtronic, NWNL Companies, Inc., and Carlson Holdings, Inc. He is a past chairman of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce and has served on the boards of a variety of public institutions, including the United Way and the Walker Art Center.
 Nelson received an A.B. degree in anthropology from Harvard University in 1959 and his M.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1963.
 Rollwagen is chairman and chief executive officer of Cray Research, a designer and manufacturer of supercomputers. He joined Cray Research in 1975 and held progressively responsible positions as vice president of finance, vice president of marketing and president, before becoming chairman and CEO.
 Prior to joining Cray Research, he held sales and marketing management positions with Control Data Corp., Monsanto Corp. and International Time-Sharing, Inc. He serves on the boards of Cray Research, Inc.; Apple Computer, Inc.; Dayton-Hudson Corporation and Minnesota Public Radio.
 Rollwagen is a founding member of the Computer Systems Policy Project, which consists of the chief executives of the 12 leading U.S. computer systems companies and advocates positions on trade and technology policy issues. He was appointed by President Reagan as a member of the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, and was reappointed to this post by President Bush. He is a member of the board of directors of the U.S.-Japan Business Council.
 Rollwagen holds an M.B.A. from Harvard and a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
