NEIGHBORFAIR PITTSBURGH TO COORDINATE SIXTH ANNUAL GLAD BAG-A-THON
PITTSBURGH, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- NeighborFair Pittsburgh (under its Neighborhood for Living Center program) will sponsor the sixth annual Glad Bag-A-Thon Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., sponsors for the event said today.
This event will be held throughout 60 City of Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
"The Glad Bag-A-Thon is a one-day, citywide community clean up. Last year's Bag-A-Thon had over 3,500 participants encompassing 80 city neighborhoods collecting over 193 tons of debris," said Terence Brady, Bag-A-Thon coordinator.
"The objective of the Bag-A-Thon is to participate in an organized spring clean-up opportunity for community organizations in the City of Pittsburgh. This event helps to improve the looks of their neighborhoods, it encourages volunteer participation and it instills community pride," said Mina Gerall, executive director of NeighborFair.
A thank you party will be held Sunday, April 26, 1 p.m., at the Pittsburgh Zoo to thank the participants for their time and effort. Pittsburgh Mayor Sophie Masloff will be on hand to present the Heinz achievement awards. The Heinz achievement awards are given to recognize outstanding neighborhood efforts. The awards categories include: most bags collected by an organization, most bags collected by one person, the best new organization and the best overall organization.
This year's event is sponsored by Glad Bag and Wrap's, Blackwell Stevenson (the Pittsburgh-based distributer of Glad), Heinz USA and the City of Pittsburgh.
A new element is being added to this year's event. NeighborFair's property maintenance and management division will work with community organizations to identify, clean and transform vacant lots into attractive open spaces, gardens or parklets. This program will kick off on April 25, and will continue throughout the summer.
The Neighborhoods for Living Center was formed in 1978 as a city program to provide technical and marketing assistance to neighborhood organizations. This enabled them to solve local problems, work more effectively with city government and to do a better job of marketing the livability of their communities. In 1989 The Neighborhoods for Living Center split off from the city to become a private nonprofit organization. "This allowed us to broaden the scope of our services that would enable us to develop more aggressive programs that would better serve neighborhood organizations and the city as a whole," said Gerall. When the Neighborhoods For Living Center became its own organization it was incorporated under NeighborFair Pittsburgh (since the incorporation and tax status already existed). "NeighborFair has two programs the neighborhoods For Living Center and its Property Maintenance and Management Division. The Neighborhoods For Living Center's programs include: all programs related to promoting and marketing living and home buying in the city. The Property Management and Maintenance Program include: clean up, maintenance, transformation and beautification programs," said Gerall.
Other upcoming events include Graffiti Wipe Out and Paint Your Heart Out. These two respective events will be held in June and September. For more information on the Neighborhoods For Living Center and its programs call 412-391-1850.
