NEGOTIATING COMMITTEES FOR STRIKING KROGER CLERKS, MEATCUTTERS
TO MEET JOINTLY TO PREPARE FOR TUESDAY'S BARGAINING SESSION
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Negotiating committees for striking Kroger clerks and meatcutters are meeting today in joint session to prepare for the bargaining session called for Tuesday by federal mediators.
Ron Brown, president of United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union Local 876, which represents nearly 7,000 clerks, and Andy Johnson, president of UFCW Local 539, representing more than 700 meat, deli and seafood workers, stated that the negotiating committees will review the status of proposals on both sides.
"We want to be prepared to respond quickly to any proposals from the company or any responses by Kroger to Local 876's proposal of April 21," Brown and Johnson said. "We will be asking rank-and-file committees to consider various 'what-if' situations. In other words, what would the committees be prepared to do if Kroger presents certain scenarios."
The committees will meet in Local 876's offices, 876 Horace Brown Drive, Madison Heights.
On Tuesday, May 5, the negotiating committees will meet briefly with the union's picket captains at 9 a.m. at Local 876 and depart together for the site of the 10 a.m. negotiations, the Holiday Inn at 1275 and 6 Mile Road.
