NEC to combine 7seven units for communications system development.

TOKYO, Sept. 30 Kyodo

NEC Corp. said Monday it will combine seven subsidiaries for development of communications systems in January to enhance its capacity of developing optical communications and other systems.

The seven subsidiaries, including NEC Communication Systems Ltd. in Tokyo, NEC Communication Systems Tohoku Ltd. in Sendai, and NEC Communication Systems Kansai Ltd. in Osaka, are currently divided by region and product lineup.

NEC Communication Systems will be the surviving entity in the seven-subsidiary integration and will have a workforce of around 3,600, NEC said. Sales of the merged company are projected at 74 billion yen for the year through March 2004.

The amalgamation of the seven units will not involve personnel cuts or plant closure, NEC added.
