NEW YORK, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Business people scattered around the world will soon be able to work together as if they were in the same place. Significant time and business trip expenses will be saved as well.
NEC Corporation announced on Friday, Sept. 24 sales in Japan of a new multimedia communications system and its groupware platform, "Multimedia Group Work System OfficeMermaid." The system will be available outside of Japan in the second half of 1994. This workstation-based multimedia system allows users in different locations to simultaneously share and process information with a full media complement including data, graphics, handwriting, voice and video.
The first product of the OfficeMermaid Series, called EWS4800/OM, is based on the UNIX(R) operating system and a system including four software packages. NEC expects to ship 3,000 systems within the next 2 years; a multipoint access function will be available in the first quarter of 1996.
The main features of the product area as follows:
Ability To Use Common Application Software
-- With the use of common applications software, users based in different locations can work together.
Option To Use The ISDN Lines, Or The Combination Of LAN And
 Telephone Lines
-- The system will be built according to users' needs. The ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) version provides high quality video and voice transmission. The Lite version, the combination of LAN (Local Area Network) and existing telephone lines, offers competitive prices.
 Employ Application Programming Interface (API)
-- API makes OfficeMermaid's functions easy to use. As a result, group work applications software, such as joint authorship of documents or architectural work is easily developed.
