NEC CORPORATION AND MOTOROLA, INC. SIGN AGREEMENT FOR HIGH SPEED PAGING PROTOCOL

NEW YORK, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- NEC Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: NIPNY) and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) have signed a Paging Protocol Agreement providing for the cross-licensing of patents for the next-generation high speed paging protocol. This agreement allows NEC to provide a one-way receive-only pager using the new protocol technology, known as FLEX TM. NEC currently plans to offer this type of product upon establishment of the service-infrastructure in the United States.
Motorola and NEC, as the industry leaders, believe the new FLEX TM Paging Protocol will provide diversified services and promote the growth of the pager market. Recent widespread growth of high performance pagers featuring both alpha and numeric displays have spawned the need for a high speed protocol to support the complex and diverse demands of pager users and private service companies.
NEC has started to provide the next-generation European Standard protocol, ERMES (European Radio Messages System) pager and continues to provide, on a worldwide basis, a broad range of pager products suited for specific communication needs.
Founded in 1899 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, NEC Corporation is a global leader on high technology products and services. The company and its affiliates worldwide develop, manufacture and market a broad range of advanced communications, computer and electron device products and systems. In the United States, NEC's U.S. affiliates include NEC America, NEC Technologies, NEC Electronics, and the NEC Research Institute.
