NCR TO SUPPORT WINDOWS NT CUSTOMERS WORLDWIDE -Windows NT to run on specific NCR System 3000 models-

DAYTON, Ohio, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR Corporation and Microsoft announced an agreement today to provide service and support to Windows NT customers in more locations worldwide than any other company in the information technology industry. In addition, NCR announced the endorsement of Windows NT for specific models of the NCR System 3000 family.
"With services professionals in more than 1300 locations in 120 countries, we bring global support to Windows NT users," said Dick Reese, NCR vice president, Customer Services Division. "Our global presence, along with our commitment to delighting customers, makes NCR unique in our ability to support customers selecting the Windows NT operating system."
"We are pleased to offer NCR's extensive expertise and global support capabilities to Windows NT users. Our partnership offers our customers a complete solution for their Windows NT computing needs," said Dwayne Walker, Microsoft's director of Windows NT and Networking Products.
NCR's customer services organizations will offer support to all Windows NT customers, including those running Windows NT on other computing platforms. NCR is already responding to Windows NT customer calls, and plans to announce a Global Customer Support Center for Windows NT in July. Support services provided by the center will include 24-hour telephone access; direct connection to a Windows NT specialist; multi-lingual assistance; problem solving; configuration guidance; system tuning; help desk services; and a bulletin board information service. NCR will also develop professional services to assist customers who adopt Windows NT.
 Windows NT on NCR systems
"The availability of Windows NT on NCR systems is a natural result of the ongoing partnership between NCR and Microsoft," said Tom Mays, NCR senior vice president, General Purpose Products Group. "We believe NCR's System 3000 family represents the best possible choice for customers selecting the Windows NT environment."
NCR worked with Microsoft for more than two years on the development of Windows NT. NCR's Intel processor-based symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) systems were a primary development platform for Windows NT.
"Windows NT takes full advantage of the scalability of NCR's systems, providing new levels of responsiveness and power to our customers," Walker said.
Support for Windows NT will be offered on specific NCR System 3000 models in the 3200, 3300, 3400, 3500 product lines.
NCR 3200 models can stand alone or be clients on a
LAN. These systems offer varying levels of power to
the desktop user. For example, the NCR 3230 is
ideal as a standalone system, local area network
client, or intelligent workstation in a wide area
 network.
NCR 3300 models can be used as desktops or small
servers. These systems are expandable and offer
 higher performance options for applications
requiring fast, parallel access to bus devices. NCR
recently added the NCR 3360, which utilizes NCR's
expertise in SMP architecture and can accommodate up
 to two Pentium processors.
NCR 3400 servers allow users to access and share
information. Up to four processors in an SMP
implementation, as in the NCR 3450, provide
significant power ranges for multi-user and server
 computing environments.
NCR 3500 systems offer high availability,
reliability, data integrity, and performance through
powerful error detection and recovery, and as such
are designed as high performance network or database
servers for multiple users. With up to 8 processors
in an SMP implementation, the NCR 3550 is a highly
reliable, high performance general purpose computing
 platform.
NCR will offer the NCR 3450 and NCR 3550 SMP systems with Windows NT in a special Beta program beginning in August.
NCR's enterprise computing architecture will support Windows NT clients and Windows NT workgroups through the NCR StarGROUP operating environment on a UNIX server. End users will have access to StarGROUP services such as SNA Workgroup, Asynchronous Gateway, and Remote Access Gateway for enterprise connectivity. Windows NT also will be integrated under NCR StarSENTRY systems and network management facilities at a later date.
NCR StarLAN network connectivity products, including bridges, routers, and SmartHUB, are also available immediately. StarLAN network interface cards will be available later in the year. NCR also will support Windows NT application servers operating in NetWare environments. In addition, the NCR WaveLAN wireless area network, which uses advanced radio-frequency communications to create wireless LANs, has been certified for operation with Windows NT.
NCR, an AT&T Company, develops, manufactures, markets, supports, and services enterprise-wide information systems for worldwide markets.
