NCR OFFERS VOLUNTARY SEPARATION PROGRAM TO EMPLOYEES IN THE UNITED STATES

DAYTON, Ohio, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- In the second phase of an initiative announced last month to trim its worldwide work force by as much as 12 to 15 percent, NCR Corporation today unveiled a voluntary separation program for eligible employees in the United States.
Under the terms of the program, eligible NCR people with at least one year of service as of Feb. 11, 1994, will receive a package of enhanced benefits if they notify NCR between Jan. 3 and Jan. 31, 1994, of their intent to leave the company effective Feb. 11, 1994.
The program follows a previously announced early out package also for U.S. employees. Of the approximately 27,000 NCR employees located in the United States, about 25,000 are eligible for the voluntary separation program and 5,500 are eligible for the early out program.
The company is unable to estimate charges for the program, which will be taken in the first quarter of 1994.
The voluntary separation benefit package includes: separation pay based on length of service; a lump-sum transition assistance payment of $5,000 plus 10 percent of separation pay; and medical, dental and basic life insurance benefits for one year or the separation pay period, whichever is greater. A typical employee would receive roughly one week of separation pay per year of service.
NCR is also providing a comprehensive support program to assist eligible employees in making decisions about their options. Detailed information packages have been mailed to employees' homes, including information about personal outplacement assistance.
"Recently, NCR announced a new, customer-focused business model, which leverages company resources to deliver total business solutions to customers quickly, efficiently and with precision. As we implement this new strategic model, which calls for fewer layers of management between NCR and its customers, we must make difficult decisions about the size of our organization," said Jerre Stead, NCR chairman and CEO. "At the same time, we want to provide supportive, voluntary programs for our associates. This program offers an enhanced leave package to provide resources for associates who choose to seek out new opportunities."
