NCR LAUNCHES GLOBAL SUPPORT CENTER FOR WINDOWS NT

 Offers Round-the-Clock, Worldwide Support for
 Microsoft's Popular Operating System
COLUMBIA, S.C., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR today opened its Windows NT(TM) Global Support Center, offering round-the-clock telephone support to Windows NT users worldwide. Windows NT, Microsoft's long- awaited high-end computer operating system, is fast becoming one of the industry's most popular operating system choices.
The NCR center offers support to anyone using Windows NT, including customers running Windows NT on NCR System 3000 computers, as well as those running Windows NT on other computing platforms.
The telephone number for the Windows NT Global Support Center, 800-469-4668 (800-GO WIN NT), is toll-free within the U.S. Additional toll-free access numbers for callers from major countries around the world will be provided within the next few weeks. In the interim, international callers whose phone systems cannot access the 800 number can dial 803-739-7864.
The price of subscribing to the center is based on the number of users a given customer sponsors. The price is discounted as the number of users increases.
For example, the U.S. price for a single user to receive round-the- clock support for one year is $180. Discounts begin at 25 or more users, and the per-user price progressively drops to $18 if more than 1,000 users are enrolled.
"NCR's goal is to delight our customers by offering worldwide callers direct connection to a Windows NT expert at any time of the day or night, 365 days per year. And when on-site support is needed, NCR offers assistance in more locations worldwide than any other company in the information technology industry," said Dick Reese, vice president, NCR Customer Services Division.
"NCR is also unique in that our Windows NT experts are located in one facility where they can work as a single unit and share their experiences. This concentrated level of expertise ensures the highest quality support to all our customers, anywhere in the world, no matter what time they call," said Reese.
"We are very pleased that NCR has taken an aggressive role in supporting Windows NT," said Steve Ballmer, executive vice president, Worldwide Service and Support at Microsoft. "Their Windows NT Global Support Center will play a key role in the service and support of Windows NT customers around the world."
The Windows NT Global Support Center offers assistance with problem solving, system tuning, configuration issues, and implementation questions. It can also serve as a help desk for a customer's Windows NT users. The center features the following:
-- 24-hour access -- NCR experts will be available to accept calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
-- Multi-lingual assistance -- Each caller may speak in the language of his or her choice. This can be handled by one of the center's multi- lingual staff members or, if necessary, the center will add an interpreter from AT&T Language Line(R) Services to the call, at no cost to the caller. Language Line Services provides over-the-phone interpretation from English to more than 140 languages.
-- Bulletin board service -- Users can access the Global Support Center's electronic bulletin board service for fast, convenient access to Windows NT information.
-- Dispatch for on-site support as needed -- Based on past experience with similar support centers, NCR expects that over 99 percent of customer inquiries will be resolved over the phone. If, however, a call requires that support be provided on the customer's premises, NCR can provide that support from more than 1,300 locations in more than 120 countries around the world -- more locations than any other information systems vendor.
NCR support for Windows NT grew from an ongoing relationship between NCR and Microsoft. NCR worked with Microsoft for more than two years on the development of Windows NT. NCR's Intel processor-based symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) systems were a primary development platform for Windows NT.
"In addition to our Windows NT expertise, NCR also offers Windows NT users the benefit of our dedication to, and experience in, open systems. We're uniquely qualified to help our customers sort out complex issues like interoperability, which are key to a successful transition to the Windows NT environment," said Reese.
The opening of the Global Support Center follows NCR's May 20 announcement of its agreement with Microsoft to provide service and support to Windows NT customers. At the same time, NCR endorsed Windows NT for specific models of its System 3000 family.
